Apparently this cat has now disappeared so hopefully has found his way home or someone else to look after him.

I'm hoping that he's going to talk to someone I know who runs a local rescue and she will give him some advice. Just waiting for her to let me know a good time for him to call. Last time I asked he said he'd been putting some food outside for the cat. I don't really like to ask him much as I can't do anything to help. I've got a stray I'm feeding that lives under the porta cabin at work that I want the rescue to take and he's been waiting for about 4 months.

It's depressing at the moment and I feel bad putting pressure on the rescue as I know they are bursting at the seams. I don't like the thought of either of them being outside in the cold weather.

If after checking the 'found cat' advice  the cat doesn't appear to belong to anyone then he needs to get in touch with those rescues ASAP.  If they all say they're full - which is likely then he should ask to go on a waiting list or for a 'direct homing' because the sooner that happens the sooner the cat will get a home.
 
Just wondering though is he feeding the cat? if he's willing to do that (or a neighbour even) and give it some shelter outside just until a rescue can help then I'm wondering whether the cat may stop trying to get in the cat flap?

It seems the cat thinks he'll get food and warmth there, so that's what it's seeking.

To be honest, he is willing to do a certain amount but I'm not sure how much. He's said he would be willing to catch the cat and drive to a rescue but he's not going to be willing to do what you did Jack Spratt. I suggested he could tame the cat and take it in and that rescues would give him some advice to help him do that, but he didn't seem interested. I think if the cat was friendly with his pets he'd just let it stay as his original cat was a stray.

How much effort is he willing to put into helping this cat? What I mean is, is he prepared to call all the local rescues and vets and put up posters regarding him? (I assume it's an unneutered tom.)

General was a stray, I asked around and noone seemed to know where he'd come from - I never put the posters up, because he was in such a state that it seemed the only likely option was he was a stray. That and his behaviour with people indicated he wasn't sure how to be around them.

I raised funds to get him neutered and chipped and then ensured he had a safe new home to go to he'd feel himself in.

Would the chap be prepared to help this cat, and in turn help his own animals? Or is that not a possibility?

He's asked around at all the neighbours houses and no one knows the cat and they all think it's a stray. I've given him the catchat details so he's got a few more places to try.

He can't lock the cat flap as his cat and dog use it and it's not got a magnetic lock or anything. I think though that if he locks the cat out and it is a stray the problem will just pass onto someon else.

First of all has the chap tried to find out whether the cat belongs to anyone? many cats do try and get into people's houses but have a home. 
Best thing if the cat is approachable is to put a paper collar on (see lost and found advice) and get them to contact if it does.
If not get in touch with rescues in the area and tell him to explain how urgent the situation is:

eta: just another thought meanwhile, is there any way he can stop this other cat getting through the catflap?  I don't have a catflap so not sure how they work.

A chap I work with has a cat coming into his cat flap and attacking his dog and cat. He's tried to find a place in a rescue but no one has space for it. He is getting pretty desperate. Any idea what he can do, I will give him all the local rescue details to try. How do I contact animal lifeline I know they have helped alot of people. I'm worried he might take it and get it put to sleep if nothing gets done.
