Finally heard from a friend over there - here is an excerpt from her email:

...tuesday night/Wednesday morning was just horrendous from 11.30 onwards and all the prayer , meditation ,visualising that i could do not would not let me sleep.

It was like being on a boogie board in the sea and being thrashed around by the waves ... i held on to my mattress and have never been so terrified in my life. There were 9 earthquakes from just before midnight until 8 am and two were more than five on the richter scale!

I would never want any of you to have to get this terror and the flashbacks in to your memory bank. I have lost half a stone !

Yesterday mornings biggie spooked the city and I was lucky to have gone up to a friends new house bolted on to rock at the top of kennedys bush road and the three of us were sitting in their bed giving thanks and laughing about how blessed we were that we had only had two biggies (we thought) during the night when we got catapulted in to the air by the up an down one as opposed to the rush rush hurling one s like trains coming at you at high speed. Then the next biggie escaped me as I was in the car driving back in to town. Praise the Lord.

I was in Chritstchurch 4 years ago - so it shocked me quite a lot.  I didnt realize NZ has many earthquakes every year

hopefully many animals -cats /dogs were inside snoozing with their humans.

I heard about it on the radio - Sounds awful but at least there were no deaths, unlike in Pakistan  :'(
DO NOT BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER ANIMALS DIE

I believe I am not interested to know whether Vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn't. To know that the results are profitable to the race would not remove my hostility to it.  Mark Twain

Luckily it struck in the dead of night so no deaths, and only two major injuries (glass and masonry falls). One chap died of a heart-attack during the quake. The central city is devastated, and many of the buildings i used to work on are now gone, beyond saving. The cathedral is intact (thank heavens) and so too is the Catholic Basilia, both of which had had earthquake strengthening. The Arts Centre (formerly the University campus) has sustained damage to the Great Hall and other buildings, but i have not been able to contact anyone I know for updates. The Timeball at Lyttelton has lost its tower, and I have no idea what if anything has happened to the museum, which houses one of the most important collections of Antartic memorabilia in the world - from the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration. It doesn't look too good from what I have seen so far.

I hadn't heard this Jo.  So very sad.  I think Christchurch, NZ is perhaps my favourite city  :(

Not sure if you guys will have heard yet, but Christchurch NZ was hit by a grade 7.2 earthquake a couple of days ago. Many homeless and I imagine a lot of animals have run away from home as well. The SPCA in Christchurch does a good job, and has already updated its website (a bit after the horse has bolted, admittedly) with a disaster survival kit for your pets. Anyone who wishes can donate money via their site.
