Luckily it struck in the dead of night so no deaths, and only two major injuries (glass and masonry falls). One chap died of a heart-attack during the quake. The central city is devastated, and many of the buildings i used to work on are now gone, beyond saving. The cathedral is intact (thank heavens) and so too is the Catholic Basilia, both of which had had earthquake strengthening. The Arts Centre (formerly the University campus) has sustained damage to the Great Hall and other buildings, but i have not been able to contact anyone I know for updates. The Timeball at Lyttelton has lost its tower, and I have no idea what if anything has happened to the museum, which houses one of the most important collections of Antartic memorabilia in the world - from the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration. It doesn't look too good from what I have seen so far.
