I have managed to trace the vets he was under and get his history.. A few dentals done, 1-4 extractions in 2007, then scale and polish since then. he has a grade 2 heart murmer when last checked on left side so will have that checked over tomorrow with his 1st vaccination..

I have read that pets can be prescribed some of the same drugs that humans use as antidepressants, that might be worth considering if Zylkene, Feliway and lots of cuddles are not effective.  :(
:'( My beautiful Noah rescued 13/02/09, adopted 11/10/09, taken 11/02/11 :'( You deserved so much more.

oh bless him ... he really does sound like he is "lost and alone".   It's good that you are able to take him in with you ... by the sounds of things he really needs human company.

My heart goes out to the poor baby ... I hope you are able to find a fosterer who can give him the much needed 1 to 1 time he so obviously wants

I agree with Teresa ... he nees something familiar to keep him calm.  I know what Zephyr is like in a carrier and at the vets ... the noises he makes are unbelievable.  This little lad although sad may not be "grieving" as such he may just be howling because he isn't used to being confined.  If this is the case he may well actaully get more depressed the longer he is kept in a pen.

I really hope you are able to calm him down and reassure him that it’s going to be OK.  I would imagine lots of fuss and cuddles will be needed for this one.

BTW … if the daughter was so upset why didn’t she take the cat?

It isnt howling.. Its a very slow long whimper cry.. it isnt loud either..  The daughter is devistated and in a real state, she has 5 cats herself, one semi ferral who wont accept another cat and in all honesty she isnt fit enough at the moment due to whats happened to be able to take her mums cat on aswell and cope with keeping him seperated etc..

I have the carrier with a blanket in that is from his home so there is the home smell there.. I had in with me all last night which has helped alot, he was literaly on me or at my side all night for comfort touch.. I am trying to find a foster home for him where he can get one to one also, but all our fosterers are full and/or have lots of cats/animals at the moment.. Ive took my lap top up to my room and such and will stay up in there with him most the day also..

The poor boy needs one of his deceased owners slippers or an old jumper, sometyhing with the owners familar scent that he can cuddle up to while he comes to terms with things.

Just said the same thing in a message on another site to Andrea. A familiar scent when everything else is so unfamiliar and lacking in his usual routine is definitely necessary.

Also mentioned Feliway. Can work pretty well at calming cats and might help him a little. Poor boy. :( Well done for helping him, Andrea.

I am sorry to hear this, poor little thing. I know the Cinnamon Trust use Rescue REmedy on grieving cats (and when they are grieving for both a human and feline companion). HE will need lots of cuddles and reassurance - do you have any fosterers that could give him a lot of one to one attention? Good luck with him.
Please spay your cat

Poor boy  :(

I know this is supposed to help people, but I wonder if the Blue Cross bereavement line might have some ideas?

I think all you can do is give as much attention and comfort as you can and being with a person in a house rather than caged would be best.

Cats grieve the same as us and I believe it can take them a long time to get over their loss...............I am feeling so sad to read about this

Today has been a truly awful day for me. I was called last night by the police which some of you may of read already, to collect a cat urgently because the owner had died (commited suicide) We couldnt get out last night so the police left some food down for him and it was arranged we went this morning to get him. The daughter of the woman insisted on coming which we advised against as it would be traumatic for her. Once we obtained the keys off the police to enter the house she also insisted on coming in. We went in which wasnt nice at all and the cat wasnt in there so we called out to him but he didnt show. The daughter said this is so out of character as he is always there and comes running, but cats sense things and know whats what.. A neighbour made us a drink so we had hung around longer than expected which came in our favour because as we handed cups back the cat jumped over to the garden.. You could see in his eyes then the distress and uncertanty he was feeling. After letting the daughter have a cuddle and her breaking down, we took the cat and left.. On the way back to mine this cat cried literaly all the way.. Ive never in my life heard a cat cry like this, its a heart breaking hollowing cry which isnt loud but low, sad, kind of sobbing and with drawn.. It is awful to hear :(  I settled him into a pen and left him a while to settle and spent alot of time with him today.. At one point he stopped and relaxed a short while and now he has started the same crying again.. It is tearing me to peices to hear him cry like this, he is greiving badly and I dont know what to do do help and comfort him.. Im sat down stairs now typing this listening to him and its making cry and breaking my heart :( I will have him with me tonight and hope the company and my bed will help him some.. I have had animals/cats in before where the owners have died and none have greived to this extent.

He is 12 years old bless him, very well ared for and doesnt look his age. he is a lovely boy who is obviously suffering at the moment with the loss of his owner and I feel so helpless :(
