When the bathroom is being decorated they will be shut in the living room anyway.  While it still smells of whatever, I can put in the hall just outside the bathroom.  Only potential problem is if he gets used to it being in the hall and decides that's a good place to go when the tray isn't there.  I am still undecided but thinking about putting it in now.  I think I will wait until the weekend or maybe early next week and see what the opinion is about when they can decorate.  Bit of a spanner in the works in that I have been told it's unlikely I will be able to have any time off work this side of easter and I need to be there when they are doing stuff because of Jaffa and Mosi - I can't just give them a key and tell them to get on with it.  That may affect when they can actually do the decorating.  I am rather annoyed about it tbh.  I know we are a bit short staffed at work with one person off having broken her ankle and most of us trying to use up our leave by the end of march (I am off tomorrow and have had a few days off over the past few weeks - booked before the flooding) but it is a bit of an emergency.

I think you should set it up now.

When I am using the bathroom where the birmans tray is, I put it out on the landing and when he was ill inside the bedroom so I could close it to stop him having a seisure and falling down stairs.

They dont like it out of the bath room but will use it when there is nowhere else to go.

I think I'd probably set it up now, or as Claire suggested, a place just outside the bathroom for now.

Depends what paint you are using, but emulsion paints are fairly low odour now and very quick drying, and you can get paint for woodwork which is also quick drying and low odour.

depends how long, I suppose

won't you have to wait awhile until the bathroom is completely dried out before redecorating?

I'd be inclined to wait until after the room has been decorated and he'll have full unrestricted access again, unless you have a place just outside the bathroom where he could still easily find it whilst the decorations are been done?

Starting a new thread to get your attention  ;D  I was planning to add a second tray for Jaffa and put it in the bathroom.  I ordered extra litter etc and was all set and then I had my flood.  So now I don't know whether to get it set up asap or wait until after the bathroom has been re-decorated.  If I set it up now and it gets used, he may not like the fact that the bathroom will be off limits when being decorated.  but given that he has sprayed a few more times, I wonder whether I should just get it set up and not worry too much about the fact that he wont be able to access the bathroom some of the time (and that it will smell of paint when decorated).  What d'you think?
