The Munchkin is prone to matting at the base of his tail especially in the summer. I do the combination of combing and nail scissors but as he hates being groomed its all a bit hit & miss really..

I carefully tease them apart, if they are too knotted together I cut down the way and then tease apart!

My Misty started getting Bother with Knots when He started His Fortekor medicine, He didn't mind getting groomed before
but when there are knots and tangles involved, it was a different matter 

as Janeyk suggest's the best way of dealing with these hard lumps of Fur, is to Gently Tease them & pull them out with your Fingers
" some will require a bit of strength when pulling, just got to be careful it's only hair and not skin aswell "
when you get to the stage that there is a loose lump, thats when to get the slicker out 


Olivia had a few when I first got Her, but if you get them out and keep on top of it ( i.e. regular grooming ) that should keep them at bay

A few of my old cats have had matts in their fur, Schui was more prone to them because he couldn't groom well and Squeaky's fur easily matted when it was in poor condition when he was ill.  What I have done is to gently tease the knots apart with my fingers and trim away the fur but be very careful and usually when you have trimmed a bit of the fur you can comb it apart and trim again until the knots have gone.  If there are alot of knots or the fur is tightly matted and the cat gets too distressed then the vet will help with this.

Dear All

We have a big ginger tom cat that was once feral and he sort of
adopted us.He's a beautiful cat a very loving.
There are small patches of fir on his back that have become 'lumpy'
I have tried to brush these lumps away, which he loves. but am unable
to get rid of them as they are very matted. They are only about 1/2"
across but I would like to remove them.
Does anybody have any suggestions.
