Yep, always a good policy to clean mucky eyes... but also if it gets too often or too severe he really does need to see the V-E-T.  There are many causes of recurring eye inflammations and you need to rule out things which require direct action and specialist treatments.  :)

In the meantime, could you bathe it with boiled then cooled salt water?

No salt, Mark. It only serves to aggrevate the eye further and speed up mucus production. Plain warm water is best.  ;)

 :shy: Thanks Julie.

I didn't know that - I always keep a bottle of canocular in the house as Willow needed her eyes done a few times a day.

Well I think for anything else, Mark, a bit of salt can be a good idea. Especially for irrigating an abcess. Salt does have a mildly anticeptic effect... but judging amounts to use when mixing a solution is hard if you're not an expert and with something as sensitive as an eye I just avoid salt altogether.  ;)

Catherine, eyes can clear up on their own, and can also flare up again for no good reason. It depends on the root cause... sometimes puss can be carrying a virus which periodically flares up. So keep an eye on the situation.... get it?? Eye on it???  I should charge for these gems, you know!  :evillaugh:

Leave him sleep for now. But as soon as he wakes if he can't open the eye, then's the time to act.  ;) The gunk itself is infected and carries bacteria so obviously wash hands before touching hom elsewhere etc...

I should add that I rescue a lot of feral kittens and an awful lot come to me with cat flu and sticky eyes... if I had a penny for every eye I've bathed I'd be off somewhere sunny and not shivering in this snow!

LOL  :evillaugh:
ok then il have to wait until tiggy wakes up..  :thanks: again for all your help thankyou everyone i'd be in a state by now if it wasnt for you helpful people  :shy:

I can understand... sometimes the stress involved in taking them to the vet can be as bad as the issue itself.

Just make sure that eye doesn't glue shut for too long and you should have a day or two to see if it settles.  :)

Keep calm. Eye infections are a common problem.

Get some cotton wool, make it damp and clean any gunk off working gently across the eye. Make sure you remove all of it. Keep doing it every now and again when you see a build up of gunk. Don't be surprised if the eye does get a bit more sticky a short while after you clean it - the eye has been fooled into thinking there's a foreign body in there so it will produce mucus in an attempt to remove it. The more you fiddle with eyes, the more the body stimulates the production of mucus. Most importantly, do try to avoid the eye sealing itself and closing up completely. Not good at all to have infection working away behind a closed eye.

Make an appointment tomorrow to go see your vet. There's a wonderful ointment they'll give you that will fix puss's eye in no time!  ;)

He may have a touch of conjuctivitis or he may have scratched it.  I would definitely recommend a vet visit tomorrow if possible to get it checked out.
