just catching up and you have my condolences.
I am sorry that it did not go well, but as you say, poor Thomas was sedated and therefore would have had a peaceful passing.

Vets should be flogged in public for not being able to do the process with as little problems as possible. Its such a stressful time for the humans involved in the tragedy, the last thing you need is for a bungling vet.

RIP Thomas, Puss will have found the ropes by now so he can show you around and please tell him ENOUGH! no more spraying please , let us have a bit of sunshine before winter sets in!

Hi All

So touched that people have taken the time to help out at a distressing time - just to say that very sadly that Tomas had to be put to sleep today, mum is absolutley devastated as unfortunately the PTS didn't go well in the vets as they managed to burst a vein during the process, thank goodness Tomas was sedated and never knew what was going on but this has made my mum so much worse because of this.

It's all over now and Tomas is now at rest.  We'll miss our wee friend without the 'H' in his name (long story)!

Thanks everyone.

Lizzie xxxx

Unfortunately Tomas is not doing too well at all, hasn't eaten, drunk or been able to move by himself for 4 days - I think that there is more going on here than the blindness and high blood pressure, we have a feeling that he may now also be a bit brain damaged so will be going to the vet tomorrow - I feel that he may have also had a stroke or similar.

His quality of life is now so poor so I don't think the outcome is going to be good.

Thanks to all for your help and kindness.

Lizzie

Hiya, my Bridge Baby Max suddenly went blind as well, he had kidney and thyroid problems.

I'm not sure if it was complete sudden blindness, or just an onset over a few days, but his eyes were huge and black, and we were told his retinas had detached.  He was prescribed 1/8 tablet of Istin every day to bring the blood pressure back down again.

Max was always and indoor cat using a litter tray, and he amazed me how well he adapted.  The vet things he may have actually regained a bit of his sight as he did seem to be able to follow things, which not have been just through sound or senses alone.  He learned to jump onto things still, and did pretty much everything normally, just a much slower and more cautious version of normal.

Sadly my boy passed away last month due to his kidneys, so I didn't get to see how much more sight might have come back  :(

Best of luck with your Mum's cat, and hopefully he can learn to adapt to his new environment xxxx

Fingers crossed he learns to adapt - I fostered two cats back end of last year/beginning of this who were both blind (although one was only partially) - we didn't know their history though, as both were found on the streets. Both could use a litter tray with very few problems (an occasional overshoot) - but they were a tad messy, I did have to sweep up more than usual. Sadly both had other health issues and were older than Tomas, so only had a few months wtih me, but it was amazing how they adjusted.

Thomas is quite young to have these problems and am sure the stress of frequent vets visits didnt help but would not have thought it to have sure a severe affect.

Kocka was seem by a specialist eye person at the vets cos they had one on the staff.

Kocka also used to go out and would not use an indoor tray and even when blind she would toddle outside but was in a place where she could not get lost.

I guess your mother knows to be very careful about moving things in the house so that Thomas can learn his way without seeing, also not to sudenly touch hoim without some kind of little tiny noise first so he knows she is there.

They can cope very well when blind but it was the flapping of the retinas that cause Kocka the real problems.

Retinas do not reattach and in a way the best thing would be if Thomas stayed blind, cos they learn very quickly to adapt.

The totally black eyes was how I first new that Kocka was blind and Thomas sounds so like Kocka in that she also would never hurt anybody. However she was very determined to do her thing but the vets was a place that stressed her greatly.

Thanks, JaneyK - a wee bit of hope possibly!  How good of you to adopt poor Pep and good to know that his hbp is possibly lowering.

Thanks Gill, your post was really helpful.  His name is Tomas and he is a mainly outdoor tabby cat who won't cope well with being kept indoors, mind you he's not doing much at all at the moment other than being curled up under a chair.  He's never used a litter tray in his life so not sure how he will cope with this especially with now being blind.  He's not eating or drinking but that could just be down to the shock that he has experienced today.  He has been back and forth to the vets about 4 times over the last month or so as he was unable to eat or swallow well due to a swelling under his tongue (not a tumour,  cause of swelling unknown) but this appears to be unconnected but I'm just wondering if the trauma of al lthese vets visits and various injections/antibiotics that he has had that have contributed to the hbp.  He's quite a timid cat so can get stressed easily but never bites or scratches

We think Tomas is around 12 years old - he was a stray who wandered into the house through the cat flap around 11 years ago, just after mum's previous cat died, moved in, made himself at home and never left!  He has been very spoilt since then.

Tomas's eyes are quite scary looking now as they are totally black i.e. totally dilated pupils, no colour or white at all.  The vet is giving no opinion and wants to try him on these tablets so mum feels she should try for a week or so and then possibly make a decision as she can then ascertain how he is doing.  Mum is elderly and hoping for a miracle.

Thanks again - your honest post was most appreciated.

 Hi Lizzie I am so sorry to hear about this.  We have had 2 cats who have lost their sight although for different reasons Timmy's was sudden and was due to a brain tumour and Schui had various illnesses.  However, my latest addition Pep was going to be pts and was fortunately rescued and fostered for a few months before we adopted him.  He is deaf and blind, his deafness is down to old age - he's 17 and his eyesight I/we believe was because of his illnessses ie high bp.  Tests showed he had high blood pressure, heart problems and hyperthyroidism and we have no idea how long he could have these problems.   He is on Istin for his blood pressure and I took him last week for a check over and his bp was of a normal cat visiting a vet.  I really do hope that your mum's cat improves soon too with medication

Yes my cat Kocka sudeenly went blind, exactly the same.

She also had thyroid and kidney probs and was about 18/19 at the time.

As the retinas were detached they would flap so sometimes she could see and other times not. This did upset her and her normal sight was also that of an elderly cat.

I dont remember anyone testing her blood pressure cos this is about 6 years or so ago now and I was just prepeparing to move.

She was on blood pressure meds from late 04 and also we were living in a very very stressful situation at the time and obviouslt stress is not good for them.

Concerning having him pts , this is only a decision that your mum can make but its a good idea to ask the vets opinion and what they would do if it was their cat.

My own prognosis based on what happened to Kocka is that the cat is likely to get worse only and its the quality of life that is the important thing.....it is so hard when you have had a cat for a long time and one feels like one is letting it down by taking the pts route.......I feel I should have made that decision earlier than I did on reflection   :'( :'(

I do hope this helps . Lots of love to your mum and her cat......what is its name ?

Sudden Blindess re Detached Retinas/High Blood Pressure - RIP Tomas
« Reply #1 on: September 01, 2009, 22:44:23 PM »
Hi, has anyone experienced their elderly cat going suddenly totally blind with detached retinas due to high blood pressure?  My mum is devastated re her elderly cat going suddenly blind this morning over the space of a few hours, his pupils are fully dilated and he is very disoriented.  We took him to the vet where he has been diagnosed with very high blood pressure (260) and confirmed that his retinas have become detached.

He has been prescribed tablets in the hope to reduce the blood pressure and perhaps get a small bit of sight back (possibility with one eye, the other eye is now finished).  The vet is unsure as to why he has high blood pressure as his kidneys are borderline, his heart is fine and he had a successful thyroidectomy last year.  Mum is feeling guilty as she had applied Advocate 24 hours earlier and is worried that this has caused some sort of reaction although the vet disagrees with this.

Has anyone been in the same position with their cat and, if so, could they let me know what happended i.e. did the sight ever return, did the blood pressure ever lower etc.?  Is there any hope for this situation?

He's such a poorly soul at the moment with very poor quality of life as he can hardly walk a few paces and is obviously distressed at losing his sight.  I'm wondering if it would be kinder for him to be PTS if no improvement over the next week so ANY honest advice (good or bad) from anyone would be most welcome.  I've just had to have my own 18 year old cat PTS with cancer so am dreading this outcome with mum's cat as I know she won't cope well with this.

Thanks
x
