Swampy 1 Hard boiled egg white 0.

I thought he'd swallowed it but he spat it out. He didn't seem to mind the taste, just didn't think it was food.
So the question is how to get 1/2 teaspoon down him without him minding. A size 4 gelcap won't take 1/2 teaspoon. He's off his food so can't mix it in either.

thanks Blackcat, thanks everyone, thanks Mark. I'll bounce the powdered egg white one at the vet to see how much to use if we go that route. Presumably it's far more concentrated than a normal egg.

No, no dogs nearby as they are banned from our flats

. Run into plenty of them in doggy groups in the nearby park though but I'm already thought of as a bit eccentric and offering eggs to stranger's dogs just may not go down too well in friendly old London

Will feed them to myself and OH and see if his leg hair gets a bit shinier then!

I rarely refrigerate my eggs, though supermarket ones I do. I have kept eggs for ages out of the fridge with few mishaps (so long as I remember to write the date of laying on each egg). Longer-term egg storage means you can make meringues on short notice (the white is better for meringues if older). But that doesn't solve the problem of medicinal egg white. I would poach it, personally, but then my lot tend to wolf down anything I put in front of them. Alternately, to make it a bit more palateable try frying it in a little butter. As for the balance of the egg? Do you have a friendly dog nearby? It will make his coat shine if he gets an egg a week

Shadow is looking exceedingly glossy at present. You could cook an egg a week, keep it in the fridge, use the egg white and give the balance to the dog (with the owner's permission of course).

I would be wary of any doctor who bans eggs on the grounds of cholesterol content thought. Unless you have an unusual metabolism you should be fine eating them in moderation as they contain 'good' cholesterol, not the bad stuff.

Dried egg white might be more practical as it doesn't go off - also may mix into swampy's food?

I keep mine in the fridge to ensure freshness but lift them out an hour or so before I am to cook them get to room temperature.

I've always kept my eggs in the fridge - supermarket eggs - probably comes from growing up in a warmer country but I'm worried about food poisoning. Yes they crack and take longer to cook because they get so cold as 6 eggs lasts ages around heres so they spend a long time in the fridge.
I'm going to try tomorrow with the hard boiled (5 mins maybe!) and if that doesn't work, then separate and scramble a tiny bit of the white. Swampy's def not allowed any yolk though, he just needs white for the albumin as his is pretty low nowadays.

It is perfectly safe to keep eggs out of the fridge and most will be fine after the "best before" date. I keep my girls` eggs on the worksurface, and try to use them within a month, not that they last that long! You should leave an egg at least 4 days after being laid before hard boiling as it wont set as its too fresh. This makes it difficult to peel.

Apparently, some people freeze egg yolks, so why not whites? It may be worth a try if you`re worried. I think the whole eggs seperate when defrosted, which is fine if you are going to cook them afterwards.

If you seperate the yolk you can still scramble the white, boiling one for 10 mins will be worse than microwaved

the protein content shouldn't be reduced much by cooking, mainly it's vitamin loss when boiling things like veggies and the loss is water soluble vits like B and C.

I was going to suggest hard boiled ..... I recently bought some cat food that hard boiled egg in it and all my lot loved it.

If you dropped some egg white into boiling water it would harden any amount - what about hard-boiling an egg? I've just googled and apparently you can keep it about a week in shell in fridge or covered in cold water (changed daily) but I've never done it myself.

I have to give Swampy some top up high quality protein and albumin, so apparently I must give him a very little (eg 1/2 teaspoon) well cooked egg white daily when he's not eating well and otherwise a few times a week.

Last time I microwaved the egg white for about 7 seconds and it was pretty hard. I put it in a gelcap and down it went. He won't eat it by himself. I tried a tiny bit on a teaspoon too. He looked a bit surprised, but didn't mind it. It's only a tiny bit so I'm not sure how else I could cook it, that didn't involve a microwave? How would I go about poaching such a small little bit of egg white and for how long please? (clue: I last poached myself an egg about 25 years ago

).

I'm not supposed to eat more than 1 egg a week (cholesterol

) so do you think either the cooked or uncooked egg white would keep in the fridge? I couldn't heat it up again to give it to him, but hopefully with a gelcap he'd not notice that it's cold and tastes yuk. How long would it keep for?
