Jasmine:  It's a difficult one. On the one hand you don't want to encourage breeding for profit but on the other you don't want to close off a possible rehoming route.

I once posted an add at work on behalf of someone who had found a stray they couldn't keep. However, I did not offer free to good home or ask for payment - I asked for a donation to a local cat charity.

tbh Jasmine the only reason I queried it is because it was announced that they had banned the practice - I really did just expect a straightforward answer of yes we do or not we don't

I have mixed feelings about this...

What happens to people who need to rehome their pet for genuine reasons and all the local rescues are full?
I fear it could simply lead to more animals being abandoned... or destroyed.

Agree with Millies Mum. We can put up our own cards to educate. I have twice seen adds for kittens for sale on my intranet site at work and I just put up my own add, the Purrs one, saying 'Please do not breed or buy while animals in shelters die'. It comes up next on the list and hopefully deters this practice.

Yeay. Although our local supermarket isn't on that list

What other Suparmarkets have we in our town?

Just realized when the topic was started, we had a Summerfield then (till it burnt down), didn't we?

seems like this is still rumbling on

Further to my previous correspondence, your query regarding in-store advertising of animals on our notice boards is under consideration by the Heads of Operations for our Supermarkets and Convenience stores and they will update policy as soon as they have reached a conclusion.

I quoted the orginal stuff and this is what they have come up with

I have raised your enquiry with my counterparts at The Co-operative Group and asked for their advice on this matter.  I will respond further as soon as I receive updated information.

Thank you.

sorry to drag this up again but I've been in battle with my local co-op - last weekend it was puppies this weekend kittens - this is the response I got - not very clear cut

At the present time, there is no policy regarding the advertising of animals on our in-store noticeboards.  The Store Management at your branch advise me that they have recently removed an advertisement, and will do so with any they consider inappropriate moving forwards.

I hope this answers your question.

Thank you for your time.

A lot of the ads on are for kitten- and puppy-farms, people running unlicensed businesses selling animals, which is against the law. As far as private sales is concerned, as much as I'd like to see it stopped, I think that's legal. (I'd be delighted to be corrected on this point.)
If  know that some of their adverts are illegal (and they ought to know by now) they must take reasonable steps to stop them, otherwise they too will be breaking the law by allowing it. The easiest way for them to rectify the situation would be to introduce a "no livestock" rule. It's worked elsewhere on the internet.

I got what seems to be the same stock answer from name removed. How long do you think is reasonable to wait for a further reply?

Edited: modified to remove name of ad site. Please see further post below. Thanks

On AA website it says they hope Asda will follow the example set.
I emailled AA about chewinggum tree (is that ok Kelly?) and they replied:

One of our supporters actually made us aware of the adverts on chewinggum tree and we have since written to them asking them to stop. We received a reply saying that they were looking into this issue, as it wasn’t what they originally intended for that section of the website. I have since contacted them again to see if they have made a decision and am waiting on a reply. I understand that a number of people have been expressing their concerns to chewinggum tree about the sale of animals on their site. If you would like to do the same, please send any correspondence to: Please PM me for email address.

Its a direct address so wont post it here  ;) the more people that raise their concerns the more likely it is they will stop pet ads   :wow:

Perhaps you could have a word with the manager, or contact their Head office.

Fantastic news!

MM I edited your post to remove the name of the ad website.

Peeps all please see Tan's post here: http://www.chaptanservices.com/purrs/index.php?topic=4721 on the reason why we should avoid using the names or links to these websites.

The more we use them in our website, search engines will find the name therefore just promoting those sites. The more hits they have the more revenue they generate from advertisers, so if we can do our bit here and not mention the actual names then we start our own little revolution  ;)

Pet ad ban
In your cat mag it says "A ban on advertising pets for sale has been put in place by 5 major supermarkets. Sainsburys, Tesco, Waitrose, Morrisions and the Co-op have issued the ban after a campaign by Animal Aid.
The animal rights group believes that such advertising exacerbates the problems of over breeding and also encourages impulse buys. Visit www.animalaid.co.uk "

So maybe there is hope that the likes of name removed will be on the hitlist next.   ;D
