The area may be safe generally but his different looks will put him at a higher risk to go out alone, unfortunately its the way people are  :(

Could you get permission for a run? If he makes that much of a run for the perimeter then i dont think a harness is going to fulfil his wants, a run probably wouldnt either but at least he would be safe  :shy:

I don't think using a harness is cruel at all.  When teaching my own cats about our garden,  I've used a cat harness on every one of them.  I walk them around the garden everyday until I'm certain that they know this is where they live.  I've only had one cat give me a hard time about putting the harness on and then taking it off, but once the harness is on they all seemed to enjoy the new scents of the great outdoors.

Here I even let my 4 year old grandson "help me" teach Harper. lol  Don't worry....no animals were harmed in the filming of the event! lol

I've heard of that cat proof netting for the garden.  Was it expensive to install?  I let my cats outside too and for the most part they do stay in my own garden but my Haney likes to jump the fence sometimes too.  It is always a worry while he is gone.

Securacat is a UK product Val - I think it would probably be very expensive to ship to the US but I'm sure there must be something similar available in the US.

I think it depends on what type of area you live in as to whether or not you should allow your Ragdoll out, to be honest if the area is safe enough for your moggie Jeremy then it's safe enough for Rolo too.

My two cats were indoor only for the first year of their lives with no issues, we have since moved to a house with a garden suitable for catproofing and although I live in a 'nice' area in a very quiet cul-de-sac the main 70 mile an hour road is far too close to allow my boys free reign so I've catproofed the garden using a Secur-a-cat cat proof fencing kit, basically inverted netting attached to the top of the fence so they can enjoy going outside with none of the dangers. In my opinion catproofing gives he best of both worlds when the situation dictates they can't roam freely for whatever reason.
