Me too - he is getting a bit fussy with the Classic cat food, so am mixing other foods in it just ot keep his interest up. I dont want him eating too much normal food though, in case his gums go red again.

Me too, means his thyroid levels haven't got any worse, part of me feels a bit bad for holding him back from rehoming, but there is still possible calici, as it has responded to the food, and we still dont know what is going on with his liver, while he is eating well, i am reluctant to put him through any more tests, even taking blood from him is a nightmare, I got them two hours late when he had his dental cos they struggled so much!

HE has put 400g on since his last weigh in (roughly a month, I think I was slightly over), and apart from being a tad fussy with the Classic since I treated him to some Applaws, he is still eating that well, and his gums are still fine. I am mixing a bit of HiLife in with his Classic now just to give him some variety and keep him eating it. He does love his biscuits, but will have to start watching how much he eats, as 3.8kg is a good weight, he is just very slightly thin at the back end, but dont want him putting too much weight on.

It's a good sign that he's eating well and maybe his gum redness will go in time, I don't think Schui's redness went immediately but it was a relief not be faffing, cleaning his teeth all the time and not having to have steroid injections for the inflammation and to help him eat (although he ended up having them for the nasal problems which caused some of the same symptoms!) Best of luck Sam's improve with time xx

He had one about a month ago when we did his repeat bloods (which was roughly a month after his dental), and his gums were still red then, but he is eating well, so didn't go on any meds, and when his bloods came back, it showed his liver pathology is still out, so long term Metacam isn't an option. I have some in the house in case he stops eating, and the vet will give me Antirobe if needed, but since his dental I think he has only had one off day, which is really good. He is due to be weighed tonight, but that will just be done by the receptionist, as i am happy with his gums. he is eating really well, the weigh in is because he is in the high end of normal for hyper-t, so going to weigh him monthly to track his weight, and the first sign of it going down, he will have his thyroid checked again.

Has he not to have another check-up for his gums Desley? when Schui suffered with his and the vet removed his teeth she did a follow-op appt to check they were ok and kept checking each visit after.  Thankfully teeth removal sorted his out and they were fine.

Finally managed to get some Classic Cat Food at weekend, I checked Sams gums before I opened the tin, and they were still red (3 months after taking his teeth out), he has been eating the Classic cat food really well, and he has JWB for dry, and there has been an improvement already, so goign to stock up while it is still on offer!! I can only assume it is the no ceral and soya that helps

Sam's bloods are back, his thyroid levels are the same, so still borderline, so he needs monitoring for hyper-t symptoms, his liver values are better, but still something going on, and there are signs of inflammation, which isn't surprising due to his mouth. As his liver is still iffy, we are going to just monitor his eating, and if he shows signs of being in pain with his gums, then give him Metacam/Antirobe, as both can make the liver worse. There is also the heart murmur as well. So due to multiple health issues which will need monitoring and maybe treatment in the future, we aren't actively rehoming him, although if someone rings me wanting an older cat with health issues, I will tell them about him (although i can't home a healthy 10yo, so an 11yo with health issues might not stand much of a chance), so for the time being, he is a long term foster. IF anyone would like to sponsor Sam, do get in touch.

Haven't tried Cimicat, but he is fine on cat milk. He is still eating really well, and loves biscuits, which is good. He does dribble a lot, and I do think the vet is right about this reddness being more than just a sore mouth, as his dental was about a month ago now, and I know on his second check up he had to have a small dose of Metacam due to redness - we then saw the vet cos of his cough, and he didn't suggest bringing him back, so he hasn't been seen since then. He does have quite a bit of eye crusties too.

Have you tried him with cimicat rather than ordinary cat milk? It has more calories in it  ;D

Does he have any other symptoms of calici apart from red gums? It could just be that his mouth was so sore its taking its time to get better

he is eating well, he prefers things like HiLife and Whiskas Oh So pouches, and has eaten some of his dry. He is on daily cat milk as well, cos he is still painfully thin.

Calici Virus is contageous and can be spread by cats or even by humans who have been in contact with the carrier cat.

Thanks - the vet checked his mouth first, and even a month after his dental, his gums are still very red, so she is fairly sure he has the calici virus, but we can't do anythign about treatment till the bloods come back - if his liver values are still high, it means he can't have MEtacam and I dont quite know what we will do if they are. He can eat though, although only certain foods, but he can manage dry - vet has suggested Classic, typical as it is on offer in PAH and I was only there fundraising last weekend!! One thing I do know is that he is lucky the person who found him rang us, as I know my local RSPCA test any cat with mouth issues for calici and pts immediately.

He has put on 100g in teh past month, so not great, and swaying towards a thyroid issue. He was very sweet in the vets, wanting hugs all the time.

I suppose Calici is another mark against him finding another home though, and I must do some research as he has been mixing with the other cats.

Lots of positive vibes coming your way

If Sam eats treats, and does test positive for thyroid, the only saving grace is that the tablets are so small, they can be hidden more easily

Sam is having his repeat bloods tonight, they are being sent to the lab as he needs thyroid doing, so we wont know until Sat/Mon. His last bloods were borderline for thyroid, but that could have been suppressed by his bad mouth, and his ALT was high, which hopefully was caused by his bad mouth, so a month after his dental, hopefully his ALT has gone down, but we are expecting his T4 to be higher, I would be surprised if he doesn't have a thyroid problem. I am just hoping that they dont show a high ALT and T4. He hates blood being taken, and it takes 3 people to get anything out of him!! So a condition requiring regular bloods isn't going to be fun - he also hates meds, so if he does have a thyroid prob, I am going to have fun.
