It's irresponsible at the very least to give a pet as a gift.  However, having said that, my Guinness (RIP) was a birthday gift from my ex boyfriend but he did consult me about it first and we chose her together.

It's not the trying to get the equipment I find disconcerting it's the kitten being a Christmas present in the first place. Old Mog was a gift from my first boyfriend 14 years ago so I know there are people who fully prepared to care for an animal given as a present. It's just knowing which people are when I read posts like that!

technically Misha was a Christmas present for me (although early) as the main reason we decided to take him on meeting him was another woman was interested in him as a christmas present for her 5 year old... we may yet be getting a 3rd youngster in a couple months as a foster (yeah, like they'll ever leave) when our local CP starts getting the Christmas Kittens handed in because they are 'out of control' ie people not supplying them with time, attention and distractions so they scratch stuff... or they grow leggy and not all fluffy cutesy like an 8 week old baby is

*sigh*

I hope in this families case it was a slightly thoughtless relative that supplied the kitten and they now have to frantically get the bits for it... at least they are trying I suppose

The worrying aspect of this is the trying to get free stuff for the care of the kitten. Can they afford the kitten if they can't afford a scratching post?

Proably not but they are making an effort  ;D

Very true BC, I do hope said kitten is being well looked after. It could be a wonderful home but my mind always worries when I hear of kittens being given as presents as we have al heard far too many bad stories.
