Dear all

so after having ferris decide he was not ha ving LD at all since saturday i ordered some of the stuff off zooplus, it came today and he has given it a thumbs up big style, im so relived, i have to admit i gave up and gave him some whiskers the last day or so, i havent the heart to stave him. He was following me around the house , sitting on me, jumping all over the kitchen tops, nicking his sisters food and generally being hungry all the time, i think he ate some of the ld dry but not much, i know he nicked some of his sisters tuna flakes, even though i had put them where i thought he couldnt get too, i was wrong , he jumped futher than i ever seen and he was eating it. i know some reading this may think i'm too soft or he isn't going to get better by not sticking with the LD, but id rather have him happy and not desperate and gumpy than be starving. I know him if it would have carried on he would have just left the house for days looking for food elsewhere.. and it not good for cats to not eat anything.. so anyway he loves the new stuff, its a lot more meaty than the LD and you can chop it up to look like whiskers, he has tried both the lamb and the chicken and he likes both.. very happy
going to get him a load more and some supplements tables and see how he goes. i really feel like starting a letter campagn to hilsl about the food, i mean i know its all about money but if they can make id in pouches that is edible cant they do LD? there must be amore palatable way to help a cat with liver problems...

so taste test over the cat ferris ' he say yes'

thanks for the advice on how to approach the vet, i think that you can sometimes get caught up in the fact that you like to think that they know it all...
il ring them tommorow.

ive ordered that food 1 of lamb and 1 of chicken i will taste test it, as you put it and see how we go..

You're not telling him how to do his job, the way I phrase it is to say that I've been doing some research and have come across X Y or Z. What does he/she think about this? Tiggy is now on two extra types of medication which are keeping her stable thanks to this approach. Vets are extremely well qualified but things change or new things are introduced on a daily basis. There is no way that they can keep abreast of every development in every field which is why you find they normally specialise in one particular field.

Don't know about the i/d but I'm sure you will have seen on another thread that Hills have changed the formula of the L/D

i have given ferris some new tinned l/d and he just looked at me and walked off,.. it's gonna be tough, cause he wont eat it and i know he will just toddle off and find a mouse, unless i keep him in, is i/d bad for him? he loved the pouches ...

is there some natural diet i can put him on? chicken, turkey?, i may take away wet food altogeather and leave him with the dry l/d which he seems to think is ok..

anyways il let you kno what happens

Hi Steve, hope it's true but my vet said that if the weight is stable it's unlikely to be a tumour. Fingers and paws crossed.
If his liver's struggling I would get the ok from the vet on at least the Zentonil - and if they don't mind, order it online as it's a bit cheaper.

thanks fo rtaking the time to reply in such depth, he is not losing weight at all, he just seems normal, i have checked in his mouth and its not yellow his eyes have always been murky, which is leading me to think he may have had this all the time we have had him.

I haven't had him on any drugs as the vet hasn't suggested any, i will look into the ones you mentioned. Im just getting new supplies of the L-D and i will try him, il get him I-D if he really hates it as i had him on that for a week and he loved the pouches they do.

I think a scan is a good idea, that way i would know if he has a tumour or not, i need to know really, the rat/mouse thing is a worry i think that there could be a conection somewhere cause rats eat anything, though to be fair he hasnt been out ratting or mousing for a bit, and he only does it when he thinks he os not getting enough food. Trouble is his little sister brings them home and he eats them, right double act...

once again thanks for your thoughts, hopefully i can find somehthing to help him

Hi Steve, my cat (Swampy) has liver disease. Those are fairly high ALT readings. Is your cat jaundiced? Open his mouth and see if he's all yellow in the gums and throat - and eyes.

Swampy didn't have a biopsy as the vet said that the treatment for the various liver diseases isn't that different so the risk outweighed the benefits. He did have a short scan, which should at least pick up any tumours. The problem is though that if your cat won't lie still, the drug they use to sedate is metabolised by the liver (as most are). Is your cat losing weight?

Has your vet tried Destolit, 1/4 tablet per day as per body weight of around 4-5kg cat? No clinical trials on cats but the Americans and Aussies use it and it has got some good results. (have a look on google - it's urso-something acid or Ursodial in America). Swampy started to improve after a week on that. The vet wanted him off it but we are trying several months as his ALT went down from 1500 (critical: jaundiced) to 58 on it! The l/d I've been fussing about - you were probably given the new pork one which your cat hates! I don't think it's that different in vitamin and mineral composition than the renal diets, but having said that, mine vomits all the renal diets and won't vomit l/d unless his ALT's high again. i/d is palatable and with liver disease, he needs to eat something.
Another thing that I've found very helpful is Zentonil supplements (liver support: SAMe). Try to get your vet to put him on them for a bit. If you get stuck, you could ask your vet to ring Davies Specialists in Hertfordshire as they are very nice and know about the use of Destolit and Zentonil.

I hope you manage to let him feel better soon. There's nothing that's tranmissable from his dodgy ratty diet is there, from rats to cats? Just a thought.

There are various types of liver disease and not all of them may need to be controlled with just the food. Also, if you do end up going for the ultrasound it is possible to do an ultrasound guided biopsy if needed.

The vet did a blood test for his thyroid and it was fine, the vet has sugggested a ultrasound and we may do that, they way im looking at it that if they cut him open they are going to say yes he has liver diease and you need to feed him i/d and watch him. That what im doing now, i think he is getting on a bit and i would hate to put him through something that he might not get through, when he is doing ok .

But did the vet actually do a blood test for his thyroid? If you think he is possibley older then i would see if they will do this as this can increase some of the liver enzymes. The other thing you could do is asked for an ultrasound of his scan. This is obviously not as invasive as biopsies and can often be done whilst the cat is still awake. It may give you more information as to what is going on with his liver.

the vet checked his thyoid and said it was fine, i cant understand as he a a lot better then when he was ill before , the vet suggested that he is coping with it well and tha twe need to just feed him and see what happens. I dont want them to cut him open for a biopsy, i think he maybe older than 7, when we got him they said he was 18 months old, looking back i didnt care really as he was a great cat and i wanted him. When got him from the rescue place there was loads of cats all miowing and making a fuss and he was just sat in his little hut poking his head round the corner, i knew instantly he was for me.

Anyway i dont know what else the vet can do, he was talking of a scan or x-ray, i just dont want to cut him open..

This is a tricky one Steve as there are various things that could be going on. Personally i would want the vet to be doing something a bit sooner rather than waiting to see if the blood results go up. I say this because his liver enzymes have already been increasing so i`d be a bit concerned as to why this is happening. Is he definately 7 years because i would have suggested that the vet could do a blood test to check his thyoid but they are usually a bit older than this when it is diagnosed. Also it might be worth seeing if they would send a poo sample away to check for toxoplasmosis as this can cause some liver problems. Another possibility is maybe lung worm. You can treat this using Panacur wormer which i`m sure your vet could advise you about. There are so many possibilities but i hope he is ok either way!

hello all

well we had ferris on antibiotics and special L/D food from hills, we took him back for another blood test and it has got worse...

his alt was about 440 from 330 and his AST 190 , are these bad figures? im just worried as we tired to decrease the stress on his liver but still it's gone up. I think it may be my fault, we fed him the special food and then after a month let him eat his whislers again as he was hating the special food, we couldn't take him to the vets the day after her came off his antibiotics as both me and my partner were ill. so there was a bout a 5 day gap before he got his blood test.

Anyway i need to help him , does anyone know of another good food to give him ? or any advice of suppliments of alternative stuff i can give him? what type of foods give the liver teh least amount of grief?

the vet said to try food for another month and then have another blood test, and if the test results have gone up again, then its time to worry.

he is a lot brighter than he was a month ago, back to his old self runnig around and playing with his sister, which why it baffles me that his test has gone up??

anyway any advice greatly recieved

ferris is a lot better, only had a very slight half a cough yesterday, we were watchng the ashes last night and he seemed back to himself, he thought england were rubbish and i agreed...

Only thing i m thinking is to take him back to have a chest x-ray and blood test anyway to check he is ok? does anyone think that is a good idea? or shall i just leave it ?

I took him to the vets and now im worried, he says his heart sounded fine, his breathing was ok, a little wheezy on the right side. He has given us some stuff to make him go for a poo as it may be furball stuff in his gut, he then said he seems to have some fluid on his belly and he doesn't know if its fat or not, it could be heart dieseae it could be just rentension due to furballs.. Any way have to wait 3 days and if he his no beter we have to take him back for a blood sample and a chest x-ray.. i know im just overreacting but im really worried now.. any thoughts?

obviously if i seen the cat ela i'd use my judgement but if its the occasional "hurl" then i'd try the wormer which should make a difference within 48 hrs, should he still have it after that then yes vets this week.

the way i read the post he's not ill as such and this sounds intermittent and not sitting constantly coughing (or i'd hope that would have been mentioned) and given the history provided i am sure its roundworm.

of course we can only give individual opinions and advice, which should at no time be substituted for veterinary advice so if the owner is very concerned or deems it urgent then yes the vets sooner rather than later.

could you update us on the frequency and also does the cat have any other breathing problems at any other time ?? if so then i'd change my opinion and suggest vet before worming.

i'd bet my bottom dollar he's got roundworm..thats what it sounds like when the worms mature then wriggle up the trachea from the lungs and the cat normally swallows them into the digestive tract alto can bring them up occasionally.

i'd strongly recommend worming every 3 wks for the next few months with drontal from the vets ! (or online) be sure to give him adequate dosage, its very safe so slighly more than needed is better than not enough.

hello all

good to see cat chatters on here, i need some advice..

My cat ferris 7 years old tabby has developed a cough, it seems to be a fur ball but it wont come out, he has by his own admission been eating a lot of rodents from the farm next door. He likes to eat everything, fur and all, except for the kindneys and the head... pretty grim anyway what can i give him to help it up? or could it be something else? should i go to the vets?
