I've been communicating with my MP Gisela Stuart who indicated that EDMs do not require a response but questions raised with Minister must be responded to by the Minister. She has said she will raise will Minister and copy me in. I have forewarned her that response may be "difficulties of scanners not reading all microchips". I explained that I spoke to a vet nurse yesterday who has been at our practice for many years. In that time, she recalls only one time when their scanner did not read a microchip in a dog coz he was chipped in USA.

I have also resurrected correspondence with my local council as they were supposed to have introduced a pilot scheme covering 1/4 of Birmingham last year. Seems there's been a delay due to department reorganisation that's taken 18 months so far.

Thanks for getting me backside in gear again  ;)

Yay!  My MP has signed  ;D  Not surprised, he's a bit of a champion of the underdog ... er ... undercat ...

Edit:  Only yesterday I received an email in response to the petition to get this done - the usual stock answer about how they can't do it for various reasons and that they're not going to legislate  :-[

Those govt petitions are just rubbish - I swear that they only use it not to listen to the electorate but just so's they can get your contact details and identify any potential 'dissidents'.  There is not one single one I've signed that they've said anything like 'oh, that's a good idea, we'll look into it'.

My ability to get off my ar*e to vote for my MP at the next election is likely to be directly proportionally linked to the speed of his response.
So far = FAIL.

My typing looks like i have been on the wine ........sigh

Interesting about the chip in Shadow and I think they are just copping out cos none of this takes much time or money and the amount of money councils waste, makes this look like a a flea egg in the middle of a haystack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gill, mine only arrived today so they are probably doing them in batches. I must say I am not impressed with their reasoning as the proportion of animals from overseas would be minute. And also, Shadow's microchip - inserted in New Zealand can be read by my vet who is not a registered vet for international transfers, so their reasoning is a little simplistic methinks. It sounds like a cop-out to me and I intend to point this out in my response to their email - but feel I should wait until I have not had 2 glasses of red to fuel my ire ... >:(

i have not heard a thing from my mp!

do not think this edm is going anywhere though cos have just recevied the following garbage from the petition

Tuesday 28 October 2008
Microchips - epetition response
We received a petition asking:

“We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to force Councils to Scan Dead cats for Microchips and contact their owners.”

Details of Petition:

“Currently, when a cat is found dead on the road - the countils in England and Wales send the refuse collectors to dispose of them. No attempt is made to contact the owners. We would like to force them to scan for Microchips and contact the pets owners.”

· Read the petition
· Petitions homepage

Read the Government’s response
The Government continues to support voluntary identification of pets - by micro chipping, tattooing or both - and having them registered on nationwide databases, but has no plans to make it compulsory.  Such a requirement would place an additional burden on a number of authorities which may well divert resources from other pressing problems.

It would also be virtually impossible for a local authority, or indeed a normal veterinary practice or police station, to be stocked with all the microchip readers that they would need to read every possible microchip.  Although certain standards of microchip are recommended for use as part of the Pet Travel Scheme, the pet owner may use any microchip that is available.  This includes microchips that may be available in Africa, South America etc, i.e. microchips that the police, local authorities or a vet would not be expected to have a reader for.  Nor is there a national database for microchip numbers; at present, most manufacturers run databases only in support of their own product.

Bump

Oh and I've heard back from Gisela Stuart who says may be better to raise with the Minister, which she is going to do, as it's an important matter. I don't know anything about Parliamentary procedures (don't know how often EDMs turn into law) so have asked if she will also sign EDM.

I will also get my backside in gear and get back in touch with B'ham City Council to check progress on their pilot scheme.

Gisela Stuart emailed me last night asking for my address  :-:

In my original email to her I explained that last year I tried to get B'ham City Council to introduce scanning for microchips and gave her the persons name and ref number who was supposedly in charge of introducing a pilot scheme.  I spoke to him on the phone and he told me he had a cat and fully understood etc etc but, despite chasing a few times, I heard nothing further. Could be that they are already introducing something but why do I doubt it?

Will let you know when I hear further.

Don't forget if you are sending the email via the link J gave to find your MP then it won't be sent until you click on the link in the email they send to you.

« Reply #1 on: October 23, 2008, 23:02:37 PM »
I'm sure this must have been posted before but I'm quite tired and when I searched I couldn't find anything.

My MIAOW I got at the weekend asked me to check my MP had signed the early day motion regarding cats and councils checking them for chips when they have been found ' on the road '.

Quote from: Cats Protection
Thousands of cats are killed or injured on our roads every year. Clearly the upset caused to families when this happens to a pet cat is very distressing. In many cases, owners will not even discover their loved pet's fate.

However, a recent Early Day Motion tabled by MPs David Crausby and Lindsay Hoyle aims to change this. It calls on all local authorities to routinely scan domestic cats killed on roads, thereby allowing owners of microchipped pets to be told of their cat’s death or injuries.

This EDM (no: 2079) is something Cats Protection fully supports – we microchip around 35,000 cats a year and our volunteers and staff play a big role in dealing with families naturally distraught over their missing cat or kitten.

We need your help to get this issue discussed further in Parliament and time is running out. We are acting now before the Queen’s speech sets out the parliamentary programme in November.

Please write to your MP today, even if your local authority routinely scans cats killed on roads. You can download a letter template to urge your MP to sign the EDM 2079 below. Please personalise and add your own comments to make it more effective. You can find out the name and contact email/postal address of your MP here.
