On Dr Addie's site as MM mentioned, the type of litter you use can be significant, and some litters in lab tests were found to kill all of the coronavirus, like Everclean which is what I started using after Gwynn was found to have high titres. Now I don't feel quite so paranoid about it, I'm also using PAH wood pellets in some trays, which were found to kill some of the FcoV in the lab tests.

Yes I have read Dr Addie's website in great detail now. Its a fantastic resource. My vet recommended it to me.

I have a few veterinary text books as well which are a great help.

I use sainsburys hygiene control litter. Its like catsan. It does track a little. I do have anti-tracking mats but the cats hate the feel of them so I am more likely to see accidents on the carpet.

I have bought individual poop scoops for each litter tray using a colour coding system.

trays get emptied daily of number 2 and disinfected at least twice a week.

My aim is to minimise reinfection of any of my cats by eradicating as much FCOV from the environment and any that is shed from any of the cats number twos.

Trigene is good, 1L lasts for ages  ;D

It is possible with good hygiene to eradicate fcov from a household, an example of how to do it is given on dr addies site.

What kind of litter do you use Phillip? As that can help too.

Thanks Gillian.

I think I have some Milton somewhere.

 :thanks:

I haven't actually seen it but a while ago, a woman on the checkout in Tesco told me they do an own brand Milton that is the same but really cheap.

I use "Bugs Away" from Wilkinsons. It says it kills Bacteria, Viruses and mould spores. 99.99% in under 1 minute. It's £1.99 for 500ml

There is a CP brochure on Coronavirus (available from Dr Addie site) and they say Domestos bleach and Milton are the best things - diluted 1:32 - so I guess Domestos is the cheapest option. I suppose it is a lot stronger than own brand bleach.

Milton bleach (the one used for sterilising babies bottles etc)  is sodium hypochlorite and is safe to use in the litter trays Phillip.  ;D . I alternate betwen that and Trigene.

Madkittyrescue I didn't mean to come across the wrong way as such.

I was just trying to explain my rationale.

I know you were trying to help. Sorry if I did come across that way.

I certainly don't want to become neurotic about cleaning. lol.

I have an 11 cat multi household and
clean my trays out every day. I have learnt to put less litter in the trays which helps financially, also it means i can remove pooh and then tip the remaining litter to the other end of the tray and spray and wipe where the pooh was (does that make sense ??)

Hi Philip... I wasn't trying to suggest that you didn't care for your cats... quite the opposite.  Lets just say that I've met a lot of people who have become exceedingly 'neurotic' about cleaning, etc leaving behind common sense and giving themselves a lot of extra work in the process which in some instances has been pointless.

I just wanted to make sure that you saw both sides of the coin so to speak.. as it is always difficult to tell from posts.

Thanks Madkitty rescue.

I have done loads of research on the Feline coronovirus and understand what you are saying.

Ally my ragdolls are indoor and I am looking at disinfecting litter trays twice a week. I plan to just remove faeces as necessary. Also to use separate scoops for each tray and keep separate food bowls.

This is to lower the ambient levels of the virus and so reduce the risk of re infection of my ragdolls so reducing the risk of higher corona virus antibody levels. The lower the antibody level the less chance the cat is shedding FCOV and therefore lower risk of mutation to FIP.

Delphi's FCOV antibody levels are high at the moment and so she will be shedding higher levels of FCOV in her faeces. Her levels of course should get lower over time and so the risks will reduce, but I am thinking at this point of time.

If I can do what I can realistically within the environment then at least I can reduce the risk of reinfection. I hope to get Delphi's antibody levels right down as fast as possible.

I understand this is a lot of work, but I want to do the best for my cats as they are indoor and I love them lots.

hi philip, just a wee note to say that just because the cat shows the antibodies it doesn't meant that he/she actually has it.  All it means is that they have come in contact with it at some point.

Do your cats go outside at all??  if so, then it kind of defeats the purpose of being super clean with the litter trays indoors to an extent.

Are you planning on scrubbing out the trays after every single use???  as realistically and in a multi cat household that's pretty impossible especially if you want to go out for a bit.  Also, it is carried in the faeces which means that cats can get some on their paws and trail it round the house outside the litter box and even onto each other which they can then pick up in cleaning themselves....

I'm not trying to be pernickity (sp?) but rather to show that there are a lot of other elements to it.  If the coronavirus count was low I genuinely wouldn't be worrying to excess as its more likely they have been exposed and got over it..... rather just keeping to a normal litter box hygiene otherwise you'll be scrubbing the entire house down with bleach / virkon daily.

In a rescue / pen environment this is obviously easier to implement daily... but I hope you can see where I am coming from.  I just don't want you to be worrying excessively especially as there may be no real reason too.

Virkon is also effective against coronavirus - I keep a powder tub handy as it's easy then to make up just as much as you need each time so it stays nice and fresh.  www.sphsupplies.co.uk has all sorts of useful things like this, with quick delivery too.

Its a 1 litre bottle of Trigene with a self dosing dispenser. Citrus smell.

Actually works out at good value. £11.00.

I was getting through a lot of the 250ml johnsons cleaner stuff with 5 litter trays. Those are £4.99 each but with the Trigene, you dilute it to the required strength so should last a while.

Thanks again for that info. I'm sure it will help loads.

Well we bought it in large bottles so had to water it down.
Obviously we had rather a problem at the cattery so was using it in alot of ways....

We sprayed everything with it, left for a few minutes and wiped it .

I know there are a few different ones, what one did you get ?

Just got some on Ebay.

How do you use it Michelle ?

Do you need to allow things to soak in it or is it more of a case of wipe on and rinse off.

Cleaner/bleach that can be used with cats to kill Feline Coronovirus
« Reply #1 on: September 27, 2008, 16:33:54 PM »
One my my rescue ragdolls Delphi has tested positive to Feline coronovirus antibodies. I wish to take more steps to try and reduce to likelyhood of my other ragdolls coming into contact with the virus by sharing litter trays etc.

Looking at Dr Addie's FIP website, It talks about using bleach (sodium hypochlorite) to clean litter trays etc as bleach definitely kills feline coronovirus.

I just wondered if anyone knew of a spray on bleach solution that could be used and rinsed that would be safe for cats.

I already use johnsons cleaner for cats but this takes over 20 minutes to kill feline coronovirus so feel something stronger might be appropriate.

Any help with this would be greatfully received.
