trouble is its not just the initial purchase is it, as we all know keeping them costs money and even decent people who are sort of money will feed their kids before worrying about taking the cat to the vet etc, I know that there are charities who can help but if you aren't on any benefits just struggling to make ends meet you might not qualify (I don't know??) and also as I think has been mentioned before people who are a bit better off may be cutting back on charity donations as an unnecessary drain on finances

The other people who may get kittens through BSB's are ones that have been turned down by a rescue.

Going to stick my neck out and say that most people who go to BSB are narrow minded and see the kitten as a one off purchase for a set price,they have no thought to the longterm welfare of the animal, when times get tough or the animal needs neutering or veterinary treatment they wont worry, they will simply throw away and replace. As for the BSB if they cant sell their kittens there`s always the soft old rescues to sort things.

The scary part is if people aren't taking animals on, what are the BSBs going to do with the animals?

Just because there are adverts doesn't mean they will be able to sell them RR - that is how most rescues get offered so many kittens, as they are unable to find them homes - we are taking in another 7 tomorrow.

This is very sad reading ......all the talk about  credit crunch & folk with no money cant afford to keep pets....sorry dont buy this .....going by the amount of adverts/posts daily on folk selling moggies for £80  to £100 plus & the designer  dogs which is are nothing  more then cross breeds for more then a full breed dog thats been breed tested...........a hell of a lot of folk have the money to throw away  on BSBs.......

Such a sad story if only people would have their cats spayed/nuetured there wouldnt be this problem

this is such a sad story  i would rehome another couple of cats if i could but we don't have much room  i wish people would stop abandoning cats and kittens, it's just not fair.

i agree Teresa, and obviously the rising costs affect rescues as much, if not more, than people wanting cats - i have just had to turn someone else away, fortunately we were the first rescue they tried, so hopefully another will have just rehomed a cat and have space. Even kittens aren't being rehomed as quickly as normal.

This is very sad and I fear is something which will affect all rescues. As things get tighter not only will many people  part with their pets, costs of fuel,veterinary charges animal food and litter etc will all go up in cost;  people be unwilling to take on a new pet and most  will be unable to afford to donate to rescues. Sad but true.

The rescue has done the most practical thing in alerting the local paper to its plight.  With luck, some wealthy local benefactors will pitch in.  If I were the rescue, I would offer to allow donors to sponsor pens etc

I fear that many rescues will also feel the pinch as animals are abandoned

That is really sad, there are precious few rescues already - this is the downside to people not taking animals on, it is affecting rescues.

Very sad news. Just read that the sanctuary where I got Izzy and Bella (mum is called Jez) from is facing closure....

Don't you just HATE stories like this. Very frustrating and I'm not sure what I can do to help apart from donating some cash and to be honest that alone isn't gonna lift them out of debt  Any ideas of what I could do / suggest?
