You dont need to enclose the garden with a roof to catproof it, a simple system of angled netting will do the same job and look alot nicer.

I also wouldnt let him out, IMO any deaf cat should be indoor/secure out door access.

If your interested Sue in looking into proofing then see this thread for ideas:

this one has quite a few pics http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,13864.0.html

Once chipped your proving hes yours but unless you could prove shes taken him then i think you would struggle to get the police involved, it would class as theft tho.
You should get your others chipped too incase she starts luring them too.  >:(

Hi Debsy

:thanks: for the advice but mine is already catproofed (my hubby is a joiner so it was really easy for me to get it done).  I was suggesting to Sue that she might want to consider getting it done.  Thanks anyway. TT

Topsy Tervy, I actually know someone who cat-proofed her garden. It's not for everyone but here's what she did... She put and 8/9 foot fence up with a pergola-type roof over the top. (Wooden slats) and then put some plastic mesh over the top (like what you cover a pond with). Hers was a fairly small garden (about 40ft long by 15ft wide) and she grew climbing plants from the mesh/pergola so was very pretty and managed to get some sun from the gaps of the pergola.
Personally I would find it a little bit enclosed but maybe you could some something like this one end and then have your normal garden the other?
Either that or a sectioned off 'cat area' may do the trick as then they can go outside but be safe at the same time.
Just some suggestions! :)

I have three persians (plus one who has gone to Rainbow Bridge) and as a breed they are not very streetwise so I would be especially nervous of letting a deaf one out.  Can you cat proof you garden so that he can't get out but would still have outside access?  I would be worried sick about mine if they could go wandering.

Had comments about "your beautiful cats, are they persian?  They must have cost you a fortune" from neighbours, people in the local pub, delivery men etc.  Some people who see a pedigree think immediately of pound notes.  There are some people who may grab them for that reason.

I also agree with Dawn, one of mine could be picked up by anyone.  She is so gentle and loving.  Good luck x x

Molly, my friend's cat is deaf and she doesn't let him out - I too, like Dawn would be frightened of a road accident.

That woman is really cheeky - does she have cats of her own or is she lonely or something?  I agree about the white lie about your cat's diet.

to be honest I don't think I'd let a deaf persian outside myself, they are such gentle souls anyone could pick them up and obviously being deaf adds to the problem of being run over or chased by nasty people

I agree with Kirst, I'd try keeping him in, at least till he's been chipped, and then make sure this women knows he's chipped, she might not be so keen to keep hold of him if she knows it can be proved he's yours. Vets normally have scanners and some rescues do too. I'd also ask her to stop feeding him - maybe make something up, like he's on a special veterinary prescription diet and anything other than that diet would make him ill. Just a little white lie!

If she manages to get her hands on him she is going to keep him in her house because she thinks he shouldn't be outside because he is deaf. If I get him chipped and he goes missing how can I find out if he is in her house. I know chipping him will prove he belongs to us but who can we take round with us to check and scan him. I am reallz worried about this now I don't want to lose him.

I know he may not like it but keep him in until you get him chipped - better to be sure he is safe!

About 2 zears ago one of our cats went missing, we found her about 4 months later and it seems she has moved in with a woman that lives opposite us. We spoke to the woman and told her she was ours but she said she had had her since she was a kitten and wasn't interested. We have a white persian who is deaf and I have just had a phone call from my neighbour telling me he was near this womans house and that she was worried about him because he was a bit far away from home. My partner went to get him only to find this woman picking him up and trying to take him in her house. My partner went up to her and took him off her. She asked if there was anything wrong with him saying he eats a lot and that she feeds him 3 times a day and whether we had had him vet checked. We said we had had him checked about a months ago when he was castrated.
Our main concern is that she is going to take him in and not let us have him back. We have other cats and don't feel it is fair to keep him in when all the others go out. We he goes out he doesn't normally go that far but we feel this woman is trying to encourage him in by putting food out for him.

Where would we stand if she managed to get him in and started saying he was hers. We are planning on getting him chipped when my partner gets paid next week.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
