i've often seen charities with fundraising tables at my local PAH one time last year there was a local bird rescue - ones that rescued birds of prey after neglect from owners etc. they had a small area of the store with three birds there i had a quick stroke of all of them they're facinating - but not pets!

also i'm glad that it's difficult for pet stores to sell cats and dogs. There is only one petstore i can think of that still sells kittens in my area. I do believe if chainstores were allowed puppies and kittens the rescue situation would be much worse. as it is so easy to impulse buy from a petstore, and i often hear children doing their 'want, want, want tantrums' for hamsters and gerbils which i still don't agree with but they shouldn't be allowed a kitten to shut the behaviour up, it encourages children to think of them like toys/possessions rather than a life creature with it's own ability to fight back.

i second what desley said about them taking a stance on rescue, allowing rescues to populate the store with animals rather than huge scale animal farms would be much more ethical. I know loads of rescues that deal with small animals ie hamster, guinea pigs, rabbits the adoption situation is hard for them as joe public find it easier to get the rabbit with the hutch etc all at the same time at a chainstore. and the rescues loose out that way. even beter get the cats and dogs in there too!

I cannot deny that a cat lover and his cat have a master/slave relationship. The cat is the master.

i would be interested to see how they will report people, and have to say i find them slightly hypocritical at the mo - one part of mine has rabbits for sale, one has rabbits for adoption. Why can't they make a stand, and not sell small furries, and just have them for adoption? Or even better, have animals from rescues looking for homes, that way proper checks can be made - I watched someone have to go through a form for fish, and she was asked a lot of questions, but then it was stamped and she was allowed to go and buy them, so I hope the same doesn't happen with the rabbits.

Petco in America have videos running showing rescue animals in need of homes - it's very well promoted.  I say well done to PAH they get enough criticism for the way they keep some of their animals.

This is a link to their charity fund details, its a shame the money goes into the main pot, alot more good would come of it if it went to the branches.

I cant see they dont support bsbs, where do all their animals come from! Some one who breeds unregistered/mongrel animals to sell on to them are bsbs imo.

The rehoming section has animals in it with signs saying "my owner didnt have room for my hutch" and "my owner was too young to handle me". Maybe if PAH didnt sell animals to people who didnt have room for a hutch then they wouldnt need this section :sigh:

Our local one let us have a table there to fundraise and we hope to do it again this year. When we first tried to do it they weren't allowed as they could only support the charity that the company had decided on nationally but it has changed and they are happy to let us do it now. They just been redeveloping ours so I must investigate and see if they have anywhere we can put posters up.

I'm sure I've seen signs in there saying they've donated X amount to charity (was quite a lot if I remember rightly), the only thing that doesn't ring true for me about what the manager said is the bit about reporting backstreet breeders, who do they report them to?  The RSPCA would do nothing as long as the animal had food, shelter etc and certainly wouldn't respond to a report of someone buying a lot of kitten food!  Also how would PAH know who they were or where they lived  :sneaky:

I  would like to see an end to the cards advertising animals for sale in there, usually people unable to spell Staffordshire bull terrier

My PAH doesn't have a notice board, Jollyes still does though.

I didn't realise until I was chatting to the deputy manager of the PAH store in Brislngton, Bristol ....He told me that not only does each PAH store have its own sponsored rescue centre (a local centre which they substantially support) but also the company gives a proportion of its profits to animal rescue centres, and the larger stores even have their own rehoming section.  Not only that, but he told me that they do not condone unauthorised breeding and that they report anyone they suspect of being a back street breeder (I suppose they might be alerted if someone keeps coming in for kitten food year after year).

I hope all this is true, does anyone know any different?  If it is true, I will always shop at PAH to support their work.
