Blimey i am shocked to find purrs members without insurance. Rosie cost over £2000 in vets bills before we lost her and it could have been more. You can insure a young cat for as little as six pounds a month. That's just £72 pounds a year. I'm sorry but I think not having insurance is madness, unless you are very well off. It would break my heart if my cat needed treatment and I could not afford it, credit cards have limits! Do get your little on insured ASAP Gemma.

He is georgous, it could be the perspective of the picture, but the second and fourth ones down make his paws look HUGE, if they really are that big, he is gonna be one mighty fine cat,

I think that you are doing a brilliant job with your kitten and Tigger looks to be in perfect health. I too do not have insurance on any of my pets (apart from the horse) but certainly not for the cats or pigs, I have not had to fork out any huge amounts yet, I prefer to just pay as I go.

As for food, the favourite at the moment is the Tesco home brand, pouches, the cheap stuff, they have had the more expensive but they prefer Tesco and I ain't complaining.

Its not just age RR, getting to 8 weeks doesnt suddenly make the kitten tougher, nutrition, mothers health etc

She is gorgeous. One thing I would add is Whiskas dry isn't the best quality food around and if you can, it would be good to give her something more nutritious, such as Hill's Science plan or Royal Canin. Pets at Home do a really high quality food that isn't that expensive but 10 x better than Whiskas or go-cat (it's the one in a silver bag, not the 99p one

). Not only will she look healthier, she will be healthier in the long runn

As your questions have been answered especially on the age issue.....id just add here, kittens that are under 8 weeks old & taken away from mum are at risk of falling ill & dying very quick. Something unfortunately i found out when i fostered kittens that i ended up keeping, they were well under 8 weeks old ....1 died before coming to me & others had to have emergency vet treatment. 1 collapsed in less then 20 minutes & other was in for a few days.

I didnt know about fading kitten syndrome till then

It cost me just under £300 to have Oscar PTS - it wasnt my normal vets and I do wonder if I paid over the odds - but at the time I was so distressed I didnt question it.

I let my insurance lapse and then spent over £1000 on Oscar in two weeks trying to save him , to no avail. A mistake I will not be making again.

i seriously would recommend insurance, and do so to anyone who adopts a cat from me. I have paid out thousands at the vets before realising that I could insure my oldies. I woul hate to be in a position where I couldnt afford the treatment, and had to make an awful decision based purely on money - last two years vets bills have been 4 figures, and the bulk of that has been on one cat per year. The specialist for Tiger last year cost about £800, and would have cost more if we had been able to treat what they had found. An MRI scan at teh same specialist would cost £2k, and that is without anything before and after. I have had way more back from my insurance company than I have paid in, and it really is well worth it.

Well I have 4 cats and all insured and one serious vet bill could be 3-4 thousand in one jump, you have just been lucky.

I dont want anyone on this site thinking that insurance is not a good idea and for all cat newbies, many will tell you this is essential even if they are kittens and more so if they are older cats.

If you dont wish to insure Daneille thats entirely up to you but for the rest of us insurance is a must.

i have 3 dogs 5 cats ands other pets. to pay insurance out on each of them over the years would come to more than a couple of thousand pound. thankfully every one of my pets have never fell ill at the same time meaning individual vet bills didn't cost the same as insurance. if i was paying out for insurance id either be mad or have more money than can think what to do with

no pet should be away from its mum till 8 weeks any way unless hand reared then it still shouldnt let it go to new owner before 8 weeks.
iv never bothered with insurance cheaper to pay the vet bill and iv had some woppers.

One point on insuring - no company will let you insure anything under the age of 8 weeks, and like all insurances, it starts immediately, but they dont cover illnesses in the first 2 weeks (to stop people getting them insured just cos they think something is wrong)

You might want to check out the following website for "kitten" advice ... http://www.wizz-catz.co.uk/kitteninfo.html Wizz is an animal behaviourist and her advice is very well thought of.

With regards to names this sight has lots of "colour" names http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/names/colournames.htm I like Floyd (a male Celtic name meaning "grey")

petplan for puppies starts the day you phone no waiting, might be the same for kittens. dont know what there cover like never had to use it.
if you are keeping as indoor cat check to see if they need extra vitamin d (i think it is. ), only just thought of that, it wont come through glass or plastic, other animals and children need extra if they dont go out in sunlight. i have five indoor cats so will check for myself as soon as vet opens monday. hope im making scense it does in my head. im learning all about my new rabbit and tortoise as well getting muddled up up there.

Hi Gemma, your new little friend is very cute - he reminds me of my Casper when I got him as a kitten nearly 3 years ago. Names are difficult - took me a few days to name my 2 new rescue gingers!

I noticed you said that he eats kitten whiskas and drinks milk, do you mean cows milk or cat/kitten milk? As far as I can remember cats shouldn't really be fed cows milk. Ours drink a small amount of cat milk but I don't let them have too much of it.

Hi Gemma - welcome to Purrs. Isn't your little lad fantastic! What lovely pics - he's adorable. Good on you for being responsible and asking questions about his care and welfare.

Gill makes a good point about insurance. It can save a lot of heartache, even though it seems you may pay in money for a policy that might not get used, it's well worth doing for your peace of mind and the little fella's well-being.

He reminds me of Greebo - a cat in one of Terry Pratchett's books (who belongs to Nanny Ogg, a raucous and outrageous witch!)

Although he's much more handsome!

he is absolutely gorgeous and the more questions you ask the better cos peeps here know so much.

Another thing you need to do immediately is to take out insurance for him cos most companies take 14 days before the insurance becomes valid.

Most of us would recommend AXA as a good company with good rates espeacially if you do it online.

Glad that you found us, it's a very friendly site with lots of helpful advice if needed. I do feel it my public duty to warn you that this site can be seriously addictive though - you have been warned

8 weeks is the minimum really, the longer the better as they learn all their social skills from Mum cat

2)when can i let him outside

Not until he's been neutered and has had his vaccinations - neutering is normally done at approx 6 months but some vets will do it earlier.

3)when do i get his injections done?

The first one at 9 weeks with the second jab two weeks later

4) can he be a "indoor" cat?

Of course, I've had my two as indoor cats since kittens. They need plenty of toys and interaction, more so than a cat that has access to the outdoors, to prevent him getting bored.

Hi Gemma a welcome to Purrs. to answer your questions in order ....

1) how old can they leave there moms? Ideally they would not leave their mothers until they are at least 8 weeks old and preferably older. It is not just mothers milk they get from their mom's but also a lot of training on what it is to be a cat. So leaving earlier tends to lock them into babyish behaviour and they don't have a chance to learn all there is that a cat needs to know.

2)when can i let him outside - he should not be outside until he is fully vaccinated and neutered. Most vets recommend neutering at around 6 months so you have a ways to go yet. I let mine out before he was neutered and he went walkabout over night which caused me no end of stress. It also meant that he was at risk from car accidents and disease if he got into fights with more mature toms over the lady-friends he was presumably pursuing

3)when do i get his injections done? - can't remember but someone else can fill you in on that one

4) can he be a "indoor" cat? YES!!! There is no reason why a cat can not be an indoor cat as long as you provide him with lots of 'enrichment'. That is to say, climbing towers and toys and all sorts of wonderful options that you will find if you pursue even a tenth of the more recent threads here. You can also have you back garden cat-proofed if you have a permanent home and the funds to pay for it. This allows the cat to go outside but to be restricted to your garden which keeps him safe.
