Hi Steve,
to Purrs
There's quite a bunch of us on here with FIV cats, so feel free to ask any questions at all, we're all here to help
I've had my boy Max for nearly 8 years, I adopted him aged about 2 and he'd been picked up as a stray, and tested FIV+.
Like you I was a bit nervous of the implications, would I be adopting a sick cat etc etc, but I can honestly say that apart from a dental a few years ago (FIV cats are prone to issues with their teeth and gums), we've had no problems.
He's just starting to get kidney issues now, and we've had to switch to a renal diet and monitor how things are going, but to be honest, any 10 year old cat could have exactly the same issues
You will be able to get insurance as well for an FIV cat, but the policy will not cover anything they think can be related. I've got mine purely if he broke a leg or something like that whilst hooning around the house (he's a bit of a hooligan is my boy
). I know that many rescues will help with vet bills on cats with illnesses as well, CP have always said they will cover Max's bills ....... I've not taken them up on their offer yet, but its nice to know that if there is ever a very large bill, they may help me out with it, even if I pay them back over time.
Give us a shout if you've got any specific questions you want answering, we'll do our best
