We are dealing with a similar situation just now, kittens were born dead last Saturday. Mum was rushed to vets last Sunday and as soon as she has finished her course of antibiotics (given because she had an infection), the vet said she can be spayed. I am wondering if the lady heard right

i said yes as she was on benefit

You do not have to be on benefits nowadays for a CP voucher, of course they would hop that people who can afford the cost would not ask for a voucher. Cp instructions to branches is:- Eligibility. Yellow Vouchers may be issued to anyone in genuine need of our financial assistance; this includes students, anyone in receipt of means-tested benefits and those reliant on pensions or low wages. However, if, in your opinion, the cat would not be neutered if we did not help, then please do issue a voucher. They may also be used to assist other reputable feline welfare groups (should the need arise). Our only priority is to reduce the population of unplanned, unwanted and abandoned cats in the UK.
There is of course the normal Blue neuter vouchers value  £20 and the Pink spay vouchers value £26.

I know when I picked a feral up last year that had very recently had kittens, the vets told me about 4 weeks for her womb to settle.  All vets are different, if I'd have asked Sean's vets, they would have said completely different.  I worry when mine are in season and wouldn't get them done, again you get different advice off different vets.  When I took Azura in the other week to be spayed, she was in season it turned out, the vet said they were much easier to spay when everything is enlarged   I prefer to let things settle and err on the side of caution but I would have thought a couple of weeks was plenty.  And I know for a fact none of mine would say they could go out, that is certainly crazy  :sneaky:

delaying the op, I can kind of understand. Letting her have free run in the outdoors? - madness

No she phoned up for a voucher which we will issue..She was asking if she would qualify for it and i said yes as she was on benefit.. Although the cost she had paid for the cat already makes me abit suspisious, still i think she is doing her best. Her other cat is spayed!

I could suggest she goes to another vet, but we use the vet she goes to so there must be a valid reason for this. Perhaps not getting the whole story.. ! I have made a note of the number and her details so will give her a ring again. Puss does seem to of been through alot though at the moment...

Do cats that loose their kittens (through death) etc come into season straight after then or not...? They didnt tell her to keep puss indoors.

Well thats what i thought as well. But she does use our CP vet as we know they are good..

I advised to keep puss in until then. She did sound a very nice lady.. the cat get preg mishap the daughter let her out...

She mentioned that the vet said blood vessels and risk of bleeding hence why leave it for 6wks. But wouildnt that not stop her from coming into season again? My usual advice is not to let cat out until kittens are weaned and mum spayed as mum can get preg and come into season while still feeding kittens.. ?

I am no vet but that advise i have given out for the last few years!! So now abit confused...!

I have just spoken to my vets and they say they would recommend getting her done straightaway.  They said a cat isn't like a dog where they can have a large amount of blood loss, her insides would be swollen but can still be done.  Personally if it was one of mine, I would wait a couple of weeks until things had settled a bit but that's just me being finicky.

Just wondered why she was phoning. Did she want her cat rehomed or get another one - just curious as it's an odd call?

I`ve heard some tales in my time but that beats the lot. In 6 weeks time that cat will be pregnant again. If kittens died before birth she will have no milk so should be spayed without delay.

I doubt seriously that any vet would give that advice. If the kits died in utero there is a risk of infection so the sooner the innards are outards the better, and a strong dose of antibiotics to back up with surgery. As for it being OK to let her out - what arrant nonsense - I reckon she has been talking to her local witchdoctor - sure no qualified vet would give such outrageous advice. Even if he/she had no conscience about her producing more unwanted babes, he would surely realise the risks to the cat in conceiving on top of still births  :rage: :rage: :rage:
