Well, whatever it was, Alfie seems to have bounced back - whether it was the antibiotics or what, he's much better and pretty much back to his old self. Which is a bit of a monkey, to be honest!!  :Luv2:

He does know how to worry us, though!

He and Wilf are off to the VEE - EEE - TEE tomorrow (shh!) for their boosters, so may be disgruntled!

Thanks for the vibes!

Yes i know how you feel -it doesn''t take long for them to win our hearts forever.
So glad he is on the mend - Winston had a nice piece of cod loin for his tea tonight -none of the others like fish !!!
Thanks -Smartie seems fine , you can hardly see the scar and his fur is starting to grow back . He still has his heated bed on though !!! Its been on for nearly 2 weeks now , just turning it off on occasions where he has been in a different one asleep.
I keep a medicine box for the cats and one for me -theirs has more in !!  Always have Lectade and the stuff in a tube for sickness and the runs -can''t remember its name at the minute  !?
Also on my computer chair i have a magnatherapy pad for aches and pains - i still have the aches and pains     - as the cats take it in turn to sleep on it - mainly Bungly and Winston - in fact Bungly gets behind me if i do get a chance to sit in it and in 5 mins i am perched on the edge and she has the pad and whole seat !

Aw, thanks for all the messages - it's really appreciated.   I knew that you lot would understand  . . . . .

Alfie seems a lot brighter today. I know that purrs may not always be happy purrs but when they are accompanied by persistent nudging of the backs of your legs when cooking or by repeated headbonks when trying to type, or continued patting when you are not paying attention to him, or when you are rubbing his offered tummy, I would guess that they are not purrs of pain!  ;D But it's always good to know; I think most people only think cats purr when they are blissed out!

I shall keep an eye on his eating. I've seen him drink now, which makes me feel a whole lot better. They will be having supper soon so will tempt him with something tasty then.

Bungly - glad to hear that Smartie is on the mend - maybe you can get some more restful sleep now, huh?!

Thanks again, all. I know that these big chaps have only been in our home for 10 days but it seems like they've been in our hearts for ever.

Just hoping here that Alfie is getting better- if any of mine have been a bit off colour and not drinking -i use a little plastic syringe and dribble a bit into their mouth and if not eaten either -i use a Lectade solution , that way they are still getting the vitamins/liquid .
Really hope he is feeling better - i know how you feel .
I have just about got over Smarties operation and 2 weeks of restless nights with him !!
Him and Wilf are such fabulous cats and i did vote in the poll -Alfie and Rufus.
I sometimes wish i had called Winston -McCaverty -if you know the poem -he is that cat , big yet hard to find and always doing something he shouldn''t !!!

As he is moving around, that is a good sign but purring isnt always cos they purr when they are in pain and trying to comfort themselves.

I hope he starts eating and drinking soon, especially the latter and if not I am sure you will have him back at the vet on Monday morning.

Please keep a close watch on him cos we love him too

Hey everyone, thanks so much for the positive thoughts  :Luv2:

Alfie spent all night curled up on the end of our bed. He looks a bit sorry for himself this morning but he is at least managing quite a hearty purr. He is currently snuggled up on the sofa with our daughter, watching a bit of television (so we could have a bit of a lie-in; terrible, huh?!) He's not yet been interested in any food and I haven't yet seen him use the litter tray or drink any water - so am keeping a close eye on him.

I am encouraged by the purring and the fact that he is occasionally moving from room to room - yesterday, he didn't do either of these so maybe whatever is going on with him is being tackled by the antibiotic / anti-inflammatory. . . . .

Thanks again for thinking of him. He's only been with us for 10 days but we are SO in love with him and his amazing little character and it worries us so much that he's off-colour.

I have ticked yes on Sainsbury's for things other than routine, and they have never asked what it was (Ginger had all his teeth removed). I have given similar advice to Gill.

If you dont have anything in writing in your sticky paws and your vet knows nothing, I would get insurance real quick and just say you have no history cos they are rescue cats  ;D ;D

I've been told by the RSPCA that they have a history of cystitis - I thought I would need verification of this incase I had to put it down as a pre-existing condition  . . . . . . or I could claim no knowledge of any pre-existing condition . . . .  or would that be too naughty??  :naughty:

HArna, you dont need the vets records to start insurance, Sainsbury's at least dont ask for any proof of what you tell them. Fingers crossed for them - hopefully it is nothing.

I know what you mean - this visit alone cost just under £50. Of course, I am prepared to pay as it's all part of responsible pet ownership - but it's galling as I am waiting for the previous owner's vet to fax their last 5 year vet history to mine before I can arrange insurance! (Alfie & Wilf went to be rehomed by the RSPCA as their owner couldn't look after them anymore. This means that I have been able to request vet history - although not until AFTER the adoption . . . . it's the first time I've ever had a 'rescue' cat with verifiable (hopefully!) info! . . .)

I have had two cats that have been like this, in last two months but they seem to have shooken off what ever it is now, after the vets have shooken nearly £100 out of me

They are excellent and worrying you. Furbabes, that is!  :sneaky: I love that picture of him, Harna. He looks almost human, and very fed up, bless him.  But it's surprising just how many rehomed puds come down with something or other, in the way of tummy upsets, as they adjust to new surroundings and feeding regimes. Lets hope the shots clear it up quickly.  ;)

I am sure Alfie is skulking in that carrier to punish you. He's probably holding out until you crack and get out the best quality salmon.  :sneaky:

Hello - thanks for all the kind thoughts.

well, the vet has given Alfie an antibiotic shot and an anti-inflammatory shot. Alfie (who grumbled loudly the entire time at the vets! Obviously not a fan . . .) had a slightly elevated temperature and the vet said he could feel that some glands in his stomach (?) were up.

Regarding my fear that Alfie may have swallowed something he shouldn't have, the vet told me that in 15 years of practise, he had never seen a cat who had eaten any thing apart from cotton/string - he said that cats are more discerning about what they eat and it's dogs that are usually thick enough (his words!) to eat packaging, etc.  As we are pretty sure that Alfie hasn't got to any string, we are hopeful that it's NOT the case that he has ingested anything.

Since getting home, Alfie has remained in his carry-box (by choice - the door is open) which is a bit worrying. We have to keep an eye on him, not feed him tonight and call the vet in the morning if we are still concerned. . . . . we are hoping that it won't come to that.
