So glad to hear that Ruby is on the mend - she is gorgeous.  You could try some cheese or chicken to give the tablets.

I wouldnt use peanut butter for cats, I don't think they are supposed to eat nuts. I would ask your vet about giving her Hills A/D once a week, or maybe cat milk. Kitten food is higher in fat so she might need it for longer.

Ruby Update: ;D

Ruby had a good nights sleep and didnt move from my side all night, she isnt usually allowed in my bed, but rule change for last night !!
She woke, hungry and managed to eat a good sized meal, she seems much more alert, washing and even had a quick play with her mouse!
So she looks so much more like herself, not as stiff either, she wanted to go out, as she hates the litter, she she had a bit of a potter, did what she had to do and came back in, eating more!
After 4 attempts, and 3 spoon fulls of peanut butter, managed to get the tablets down her, why is it they manage to eat all the peanut butter, and tiniest of tablets comes popping back out!!
She doesnt really want to know Alfie at the moment and a huge swipe around his ear, told him Im not in the mood for playing today Alfie!! Once he got the message, she settled in from on the fire, mouse in hand, and fell into a nice sleep!
Its just lovely to see her play, eat, do normal things, and Im sure she wonders why Im just looking at her smiling, all the time
Back to the vets at 5 tomorrow, so hopefully he will say her temp is down and she is on the mend, from what I can see , she seems to heading in the right direction! Will keep you posted... does anyone know of anything I can do to try and build Ruby up a bit, she has never really been interested much in food, unlike Alfie who is huge! and she always seems on the thin side, she was the last in litter to be born, last to start to eat ect, and her sisters are huge also ( my sister has her two sisters! and they look so much alike other than Ruby is tiny!)
She always has food on demand, biscuits and her fav, sheba, but always looks so so tiny, I think without her fur, she would look even more thin, I did ask the vet but he said it may just be her build, I worry she may be always prone to infections and virus's ,or maybe its me worrying too much as usual!!
will update :)
Gail xxxxxxxxxx
pic is of Alfie as a kitten, ( just so he doesnt feel left out!! lol)

aww thanks everyone for your kind messages, well quick update, she has slept most of day, although seems more comfy , rather than groggy!
Hasnt eaten anything else since this morning, but at least she had had some food, she is very stiff, finding it hard to get upstairs, and walking, but I think thats the muscle pain, she starts tablets tomorrow also, so hopefully they will kick in, until she is back Monday, have passed on all the hugs, and she is getting alot of tlc  :Luv2:
keep u posted xxxxxxxxx

Hi all :)
Thanks always for replies, thats why I love this site so much!
Ok rang my vets at 9am, and Ruby was in at 9.15, couldnt of been nicer... He check her all over, especially around the mouth to see if anything was stuck or she had swallowed anything she shouldn't have!
Temp was sky high, and because of the virus, the strain of cat flu she had as a kitten, said it could well be its connected, and that she may always be prone to catching infections and virus's , due to lo immune system, so he thinks its a virus, at the moment, or again this strain of cat flu, she had before.
Really checked her over well, and gave her anti inflammatory injection and an injection of antibiotic, last night she didnt move from the spot she settled in, nor did she eat or drink
she cried alot when he touched her, and seems her joints are stiff and sore
As she came home, her eyes looked brighter already in the car, and once home, first time she had moved, she came out of the basket and had a little wash, and was given some special food, and she went straight to it, ate it and had some water too
She seems weak, although is pottering, she is back on Monday to check temp and progress, if she is still feeling ill, he says he will do bloods as she is always on the thin side, but he may just be her build.... so watching her now, keeping our eyes on things, but so relived she has eaten and is moving,   I just love her to bits, and hope she is on the mend, she was so brave!
Will of course keep you posted, and thanks for concern and replies x x x x :Luv2:

Hi,
Thats not a very good vet - i had Smartie (again !!) ill once with sickness and diarreah both at the same time and i rang him as it was about 10pm - he told me to keep giving him fluids and keep an eye on him -being me was still worried as he seemed no better at 1am ,so rang again , he said to give it another hour and if i wasn''t happy , he would see me then at 2 am !
Luckily as he had nothing left in him , he stopped the sickness and the runs and i stayed up till 4am giving him water through a syringe and then took him in at 8.30 .
Course of antibiotics and an injection and he was ok within 4 days and i have no idea what he got or where from !
Today , i have found he has an enlarged heart -hair is going grey by the second!!!Hope Ruby gets better soon.
Have you got a plastic syringe to drip water into her mouth -or any lectade ?

Nope they wont speak to me, say just bring her up if im worried but will cost £100 just to see her... she isnt sneezing or runny eyes, but wasnt this last time, as this was a certain strain of cat flu, and effected her joints, and immune system,,she had mouth ulcers with it, but recovered well is 2 days after treatment, but always left her on the small side, our other cat alfie who was the carrier is huge, and hasnt affected him at all
Its just so sad to see her like this, just held some chicken out, and its like she wants it, but her mouth just wont open for it :(
she has had a few little drips of water from my fingers, so will stay up with her, and ring my vets first thing I guess, thats if they open on a Saturday
I once took Alfie to the emergency vets on a sunday in another area we lived in, he had hurt his leg and back playing and I got no compassion really, just are you ok to pay the upfront fee, didnt x ray him, looked at his leg , gave him nothing, and said keep an eye on him and to take to my own vets the next day, its just sad when it all comes down to money but hey thats life
will keep you posted and thanks for all your help xxx

He should be able to advise whther he thinks this can wait until tomorrow.

yes cat flu can come back or some of the side effects like runny eyes and nose, or sneezing.

Hi all thanks for your replies, got through to my vet answer machine, and they have an emergency place which deals with out of hours, which is a few miles away, they want £100 before they will even see her, Ruby caught a strain of cat flu, when alfie our other cat arrived about 7 months ago, he was carrying the virus, and we had them both treated and she was imunised for this, unless it can come back Im unsure,
I dont have transport, so bit of a nightmare, let alone £100 this evening
getting in a slight panic now as I always do about them,  :(

Sending you lots of positive vibes and hope she gets better soon

As Gill says, vets have to have an out of hours number on their answering machine, and they will be able to give you advice - very few do housecalls these days.
Please spay your cat

I think you need to speak to a vet tonight. On your vets phone thay must give details of where you can get after hours care and I reckon you should ring them and ask for advice.

I have just had Misa down with some bug and initially your post sounded the same but sounds like your cat is much more ill than Misa, who has recovered today,.

I think you should rring the number that your vet leaves on his phone and then tell them what the problems are and ask can it wait till tomorrow. If its a vet nursae who is not helpful and says cant advice unless we see her, insist on speaking to the emergency vet.

Fell her ears and see if they are hot, if so she has a temperature.......the more hot the higher the temperature and if very hot will need antibiotics and something to take temperature down maybe tonight.

Whats her name?

Hi very worried Ruby is not well at all :(
« Reply #1 on: March 07, 2008, 21:18:21 PM »
Hi everyone, hope your all well
Last night I noticed Ruby was swallowing very hard, Ruby for those that dont know is a 1 year old adorable ball of fluff, and from my previous posts you will know she is so loved, so Im so worried!
She carried on doing this, I checked her mouth but could see nothing.
This morning at 7, (ruby is always a bit of a time table kind of girl and always has the same routine) She didnt stir, she normally wakes with me, darts downstairs, and is ready for breakfast, she didnt do this.
After about an hour I tried to tempt her with some food but no, nothing, she seemed groggy, really lethargic, and didnt even want her tray or to outside, I thought she was maybe just having an off day and tired, save rushing to the vets.
About 4 ish she came down, but still didnt want food or water, but was vomiting, she used her tray and went back to her bed
I noticed the swallowing still carried out, and when she tried to wash herself, she paused, and seemed in pain around the mouth and stopped
Again I checked but nothing visable, but I could tell by her swishing tail, she didnt want me to look or feel around the mouth area
I thought id see how she went and take her up to her vet in the morning
But in the last hour, she seems dazzed, not really with it, slightly limp and wont move really, again I tried to tempt her with milk, water chicken tuna you name it but nothing
she purrs slightly but is also shivery, around her back I can see when she shivers,
I think either the tongue or mouth area seems slightly swollen too, and her eyes seem puffy, Im absolutely worried sick, my vets doesnt do out of hours, she means everything to me and Im unsure whats wrong and what to do, would hate to lose her, she has had illness as a kitten, but ive never seen her like this not even after her op for spaying,
Any ideas as to what to do to help her, or what may be wrong??
love Gail x x x
