Oooh, that is a bargain! Not sure if the main clipper looks a bit big for cats though. These are the ones I use:

Great product, helps a great rescue and you get a free replacement if you wear them out!

All you do is fuss/gently groom/cuddle your cat as normal whilst having them whirring near by until they associate the noise with happy times and then blast out those mats

If you've got one of those little battery trimmers you could do the coat shorter all over with that - if I remember rightly you got the little blue battery trimmer which comes with two attachment combs didnt you? If you use one of the attachment combs you can do the shorter cut all over if you wanted.

I was thinking about getting him clipped to perhaps normal cat length. The reason for this was I was sat chatting to someone at the vet's when we first had Smokey. She had a wonderful full-coated blue-point persian and obviously took great care of him. I asked about his coat and she said they had him dematted every summer as persians don't like to be too hot. I thought all cats love the warm but the fact that this cat was soooo beautiful made me think the lady knew best so I've wondered ever since.

I'd actually hate to mess with his coat now, it's so big and woolly so I'm glad you've erred on the "no" side.

For some reason, I think Smokey really likes my clippers. I gave him a beard trim yesterday to stop him eating his fur every time he washes and just zipped through all the little bobbles on his armpits. He purred and purred and seemed a little disappointed when I put the clippers away!

Well all my persians seem to love the heat - Smartie as in pic -likes to lie in the sink drainer if he gets warm ! but in the garden lies on his back with his legs in the air ! The others like t too -but they have cool little houses to get in as well ( i just take the fleece out they have in in winter. also when the sun goes down they lie on the patio.
I have 2 ceiling fans inside -living room and bedroom.
I also bought an air conditioner unit a year and half ago -but never used it as it didn''t seem so hot last year.
They will enjoy that in the bedroom if we have a hot summer.

I think persians cope well with the heat even with their big coats, as you say, they find their own ways of keeping cool. Suzie used to lie flat on her tummy with her back legs spread out behind her on the vinyl floor LOL! and they can find nice cool places outside in the shade. When you say trim - you don't mean the 'Sphynx' look do you?

Since we're on de-matting, I was thinking about this and summer recently (if we have a summer this year...). Even if the house is pretty cold, Smokey sometimes seems to find the coldest corner there is or sprawl out on the vinyl kitchen floor. In summer, he's really going to be toasty.

Do you think it's cruel or kinder to get an all over trim to help keep the heat at bay?

Update - just back from the groomer and she was excellent! She asked if I would like to stay and watch so I did and have picked up so many grooming tips... I would gladly have paid just for the advice even she if hadn't groomed the cat! Willow has had her belly shaved, a thorough combing plus a general trim and tidy up. Svetlana talked to her constantly to reassure her and the cat was very well behaved. I am absolutely amazed at the amount of fur combed out of her, she's about half the size she was yesterday

Worth every penny and I will definitely be going back in a couple of months.

I know of this lady, we've spoken on the phone before (some years ago now) and she sounded very caring and certainly from a groomer's perspective the examples on her site speak for themselves. She will I'm sure, be able to either comb or shave those areas and groom the rest of the coat through to get rid of the undercoat, so that the coat is easier to manage.

Kocka in her later years used to get matted but I wasnt charged anything at vets, well maybe just a normal consultaion fee.

They didnt have to sedate her cos for them she would just sit there..............sigh

I could have got them off if she would have let me.

They seemed to appear from nowhere but they had to grow a bit away from the skin before they could be attacked.

When I had Peony done, I was quoted £38 for her, and for Shah who is in tomorrow at the other surgery I use, I've been quoted roughly £20 odd but I have an awful feeling it's going to be a lot more because of his size

£200 depending on how long it takes, they also made a point of saying they are not a groomer and will only remove the mats so don't expect her to look pretty! After a week of agonising over it she is booked into a groomers tomorrow for a belly shave and general groom but I am concerned as to whether I've made the right choice and sedation at the vet may have been better.

I tried to look for reviews of local groomers on the internet but couldn't find a single one. The only one people seemed to be recommending was this lady in Ilford http://www.cat-grooming.co.uk/index.html, her picture gallery of before and after shots is very impressive and it's only a 45 min drive so I thought I'd give her a go, but if anyone can recommend someone in central/north London for future use that would be great.

My vet (Newark) would charge about £80 ish i would think .
Have only had one done and that was Winston -he was just full everywhere , no vaccinations since a kitten either.
I took him and had him blood tested, vaccinated and shaved and it was around £140 but that was 6 years ago.
I then bought him a little dog coat to wear.

I've found a couple of local groomers who will collect and drop off - I guess if she does it regularly it won't get to that stage - I'm tempted to take persian number two to my house and have it dematted and then try and rehome it from there

No harm in your trying first dawn, the armpit areas were always a pig in some of the cotton wool type persians. (tiny little matts but hurt like hell if you tugged abit on them)

its such a shame about persians, I've got them coming out of my ears at the moment! this friend who can't groom the tummy area and another friend who wants to rehome because of grooming issues

Foofoo is a madam with me wheras the groomers love her and say she is soooooo good!!

As far as I know my vet charges around £80 (that would be with anaesthic/sedation), prob cheaper if they don't need to do the sedation. Dawn, are there any groomers near your friend? I don't know about prices where she is, but I charge £30 per session de-mat (If its really bad I might need more than one session - which doesnt work out much cheaper than vets - but doing one session one week and the other the next or even week after, kind of splits up the cost a bit - and no sedation.
