Title: Mixed thoughts about moving my cats to our new house
Post by: Bryony84 on April 04, 2011, 11:11:49 AM
I moved my 2 cats last night from my parents house, where they have lived with me and my parents cat, Casper for the last 9 months. It was always going to be a bit traumatic as they hate the car and literally wail like they are being tortured the entire way (20 mins drive) but actually the thing that upset me the most was separating them from my parents.

My parents have always been cat people and our first cat was the most amazing creature, totally docile and loved laps. When I was around 20 and still living at home, we got Casper as a 12 week kitten and he unfortunately grew into a huge tom cat who will tolerate the odd chin rub from time to time but refuses point blank to sit on anyone's lap or take very much fuss.

My cats by contrast are total people cats and will sit on you as soon as your bum touches any kind of seat (including the toilet). They are affectionate in the extreme (I've often had to remove cat hair from up my nose or in my mouth or eyes.) and my parents got very attached to them during their stay. My Dad and Amber had a particular bond, I think she reminded him of our first cat and he cried when he said goodbye to Amber and went out when I actually came to pick them up.

Now I feel like a terrible person because the 2 of them were very attached to each other. I'm not sure there's anything I can do to make the situation any better as I think its highly unlikely they would take on another cat of their own permanently as Casper was never 100% accepting of the girls and he is also fairly high maintenance as he lost a leg in an RTA.

Not sure why I'm posting TBH but I think I needed to vent, got very little sleep last night, partly because of this and partly because the cats refused to settle and instead decided to spend the night opening my chest of drawers and removing the contents!

I'm sure your Dad will get over it (in the nicest possible way). Like when you leave a loved one at the airport and there are tears, after a while you stop feeling sad - it was just too much saying goodbye.

He can always come and visit you and the girls anytime too

my mum is actually travelling a 240mile round trip this weekend- not to visit me, but to visit Neko because she "misses him so much".  :-:

im sure your parents will be visiting you often, so they will still see each other and youll feel less guilty if they cat-sit for you this way :evillaugh:

I hope they will visit lots, they are only 20 mins drive away so can easily come for dinner. They also offered to cat sit if we go on holiday although I'm not sure I like the idea of this trauma once a year!

I thik once he sees them settled in your house he will come around to the fact that they are your cats and he might even be glad of the peace and quiet with just Casper there.

You can keep sending photos and as he is only a short distance away he can come and see them (and you, of course!).

Good luck.

If you've moved the cats because they were yours it's still bound to upset your parents, may be they would consider adopting a cat or 2 of their own now?

Janey, yes I did move them because they are mine, they were only living there because I was. My parents do already have a cat so they can't really adopt any more, its just that he isn't particularly friendly, they love him all the same but Dad has loved having lap cats around the place.

I moved house a few years ago after having Indie and Ember with me at my dads for 18 months.  now a few years down the line he still misses them but visits often ... i am under no illusions this is mainly for Ember as he bonded with her most  don't worry, I'm sure they will be fine  :) it justtakes a little time is all
