I am just back from the Vets with Spotty because he has had a sudden loss of weight over a period of about two weeks. He is in his mid teens although difficult to age as he came to me as a stray. I thought it was an infection or he might need a dental.
How could I have been so dim !!
-
I am so sorry to hear that :(
Can anything be done? I hope he reamins comfy and happy for a good long time yet xxx
-
:( :( So Sorry hun.
What did the vet say, Is it one that can be treated?
Sending loads of
-
Thanks Souffle/Tan
Don't think there is anything the Vet can do, she felt a large mass in his intestines and as she believes that he is not in any pain other than maybe a minor discomfort her advice was to keep him comfortable for as long as possible until I felt the time was right to let him go. She gave him three injections (1) steroid, (2) antibiotic and (3) pain killer.
The family are going to be a little upset when I tell them. :'(
-

-
Yvonne i am so sorry about Spotty :( I know how you feeling,my Boy had Lymphoma of intestine but we had many months of quality time together.
Thinking of you and Spotty.  x
-
As a side note does anybody have any idea what to feed, that will tempt him to eat. The stuff the Vet gave me what resembles cat sick on a plate (Royal Canin recovery diet) he did not like and neither did any of the others.
Thank you everyone for the continuing good wishes it is really great to hear from other members that have had experiences of cancer.
:thanks:
-
I don't mean this to too come across wrong ... but if Spotty only has a limited time then personally I would feed him whatever he wants .... sod all the fancy diet food.
Does he like felix AGAIL ..... it looks pretty good to me and my lot all wolf it down. If he is turning his nose up at it try warming it up a little bit for him
-
 for you Yvonne
and I agree Sam, spoil him rotten :)
-
My Ginger has cancer [lymphoma] as well and he is just eating his normal food. Vet hasn't suggested anything else and I wouldn't change anyway. He is eating well [and is putting weight on which isn't down to the steroids]. Just pander to Spotty. Hope you get him eating. Mirtazapine may help if you can't.
-
How could I have been so dim !!
You are not dim, you have had an incredible amount of grief to cope with just lately   you and Spotty will share more happy days
-
Spotty is eating and drinking ok at the moment, but we have a poo and pee problem, we have been finding smelly poos everywhere. For the time being he is confined to downstairs. If anybody has any advice on what appears to be complete incontinence it would be very welcome.
:thanks:
-
I am sorry but dont have any ideas but sending loads of good vibes.......................maybe a number of litter trays or puppy pads spread around?

-
Hope you can find a solution  Gentle :care: for Spotty.
-
We had that with Bonnie, she had trays but wouldn't use them at all I think she'd always gone outside. With the fosterer she did it in her bed apparently but she was in one room there. With us she got out off her bed and tended to mainly pee and poo in the hall so we just put puppy pads there but usually she'd still miss bless her.
Glad that Spotty is eating and drinking ok though, sending some snuggles over
-
It would be worth having him checked out as it could be an infection or possibly a partial blockage due to the lump and it could be painful making him unable to control things.
Bless him I hope the vet can help out. x
-
So sorry Yvonne. Personally I would feed him whatever he wants - quality time if not quantity time.
You are not dim, symptoms could be so many things and you couldn't know without the vet check. I do hope you have many months left together.
-
How's Spotty been doing over the last few weeks Yvonne?
-
Thanks for asking Helen. Personally I still think he has quality of life but he is now confined to the kitchen and utility because of toileting issues. I am becoming under increasing pressure to PTS not by family but outsiders that have never seen Spotty (hygiene and infection etc) but while Spotty is still looking interested in the food and water bowl I am very reluctant to make that decision, it is not one I have had to do before all my cats have gone naturally or RTA. I only saw the Vet a couple of days ago and and she never mentioned PTS.
We were going to leave him over the weekend and see what happens but there has been no radical change, he has not improved or got worse. So for the time being I just have old sheets laid on the floor and the washing machine on round the clock.
What do other peeps think?
-
Glad to hear there's been no worsening of symptoms.
What do other peeps think?
Only you know Spotty so well Yvonne, even more than your vet but your vet knows things you don't so I'd work with your vet.
So personally as difficult as I truly know it is I'd go by my own instincts (you also say your vet hasn't mentioned anything either) if you do feel unsure have a word with your vet is what I always do
-
I agree with Janey, you know Spotty best and as long as he still seems to be enjoying life then I would go with your instinct
-
I agree with the other two and to hell with what outsiders think
-
Do what you feel is right in your heart for you and Spotty. When our Cidie was ill we had this problem - like she forgot where the tray was but we just cleared up. She couldn't help it. We didn't mind and to heck with what anyone else says.
We only helped her on her way when her kidneys failed completely and there was no way back.
You will know when that time come for Spotty and till then let him eat what he likes I'd say. We stopped Cidies expensive renal diet when she refused to eat it and went back to normal. Better a few weeks of enjoying dinner and life than starving and ill :)
-
sending lots of  to you both
-
Oh what a crap start to the day Spotty passed away at about 6 am this morning. Trev and I were talking yesterday about taking him to the Vet today and so Spotty has taken that decision out of our hands.

Remember Our Love
I was chosen today
I'm learning to fly
the world took me away,
but please don't you cry
And I chose you today
to try and be strong
so please don't you cry
and don't say that I'm gone
When you're feeling alone
just remember our love,
I'm up near the stars
looking down from above.
Remember our love
In a moment you'll see
that I'm still here beside you
when you're thinking of me.

Thank you everybody for all your kind words it is much appreciated. I did not have as long with Spotty as I expected it was exactly four weeks to the day that he was diagnosed with cancer and then we lost him. Homer woke me up at 5.30 am (I have no idea how he opened the kitchen door which was definitely closed) Spotty passed at about 6 am.
I was very upset over Spotty but it was expected and he is at peace now, but just before Spotty died (missed any planning applications that must have been passed). How can I explain that would make it straight forward, our back garden is open plan and we back onto a major industrial estate, well my pets graves which we thought was on our land (three cats Jess, Cleo and Milly, two dogs, three guinea pigs and one hampster have been "excavated" to make way for Halfords. I have felt sick ever since. I don't really know what to do for the best but at least Spotty's grave which is just inside the boundary line is safe. I have been very depressed ever since.
Once again I am very glad that Purrs is here :thanks:
-
Have they been excavated and been reburied on your land? I do hope so,,,,,,,,,,,terrible thing to happen
-
The workmen would not have known that they were there. The last body was about three years ago and their little bodies are only tiny to a mighty bulldozer. It is not just my garden, we are talking about a whole row of houses and many thousand tonnes of earth.
I have been feeling mighty depressed since it happened but I am hoping to turn a corner now that the sun has come out.
At least Spotty's grave is safe and he has a lovely big red cross on it RIP my darling man xx
-
oh Yvonne what is left isn't what is important, they live in in your memories try and focus on that
-
Yes I will - thanks Dawn
-
What a terrible thing to have happened, especially at such an upsetting time in your life too
Dawn is right though, it's the memories that count and nobody can take those away from you
-
Yvonne, I'm so sorry to hear your latest bit of news.  I can imagine how I would feel if my handsome Simba and beautiful Lily were dug up. You must be heartbroken.
