Title: Is there a site in the UK that allows shelters to post adoptable cats?
Post by: CoolCyberCats on December 10, 2009, 16:30:21 PM
In the USA there is http://www.petfinder.com (http://www.petfinder.com)
They have tools for websites that allow you to list adoptable pets of a given type for a given area. I like this. About 2 years ago I added it to my website and then made the call scripted in a way that ifthe site visitor is from the USA the script figures out the state and town the IP address comes from and puts a featured adoptable cat on every page from the users area.  If the site visitor is not using a USA based IP address or the script cannot get a fix on them, the script asks for a random featured adoptable cat from anywhere in the country.

ANyway, I have several site members from the UK and I thought if such a national database exists there perhaps I could see if it is possible to link it to my code and pop up adoptable pets from the UK when a UK visitor is on the site.

There is no national databse in the UK but our sister site Cat Chat will allow rescues to post cats that need homes on there.  Thats theiir main purpose.

They are a registered charity and also have unpaid volunteers who will post pictures and info for a rescue.

It does have to be a bonafide rescue though and if you go to www.catchat.org  there is a place for rescues to ask for a form to complete to get things started.

All of us who started with Purrs came from CC when it closed its forum for a while but the rescue side never closes and if you click anywhere on the UK map they have and just pick on a rescue you will see how it works.

Catchat.org will set rescues up with an adoption page to advertise cats in need of homes. It's very well used in the UK and generates lots of enquiries for our rescue.

A quick peek at www.catchat.org and I see they have images of te cats for adoption. It seems to be PHP driven, so I assume a database is involved. I will make sote of the site and after the holidays as my time opens some I can contact them and see if they would like to work with me to add the ability to my site. It could be used by other sites in the UK too!

Just read your post again and your reply, I think you will find it best to just ask then if you can put their link on your site as we do at bottom of every page. Our picture is just because we are sister sites but they carry no links as such I dont think, except to spondors and us.

They are bound by the rules of the charity commission cos they are a registered charity and that is quite restricting .

They also do not vet any of the recues on their site other than getting them to fill in a form.

I think there is a lost and found site called pet finder.
