Title: Can I have some positive vibes for Mogs please?
Post by: tab on June 29, 2009, 09:24:51 AM
Mogs is off to the vets this morning. Ive been a bit concerned for the last couple of weeks at how little shes eating but its getting less and less and the weight is just falling off her. Shes gone from a big borderline fat solid cat last year to a thin boney cat this year. She's already had 2 check ups at the vet. Last year she had a full senior panel of blood tests and everything was good. This year shes had a general check up where I was told she was pretty good for her age but Im worried again. Shes been sleeping all the time, lying down really slowly and carefully as though it hurts and as shes not eating shes also not poo'ing much. Of course as soon as I make the decision its vet time I give her coley as a treat and she eats a block and a half. She did have to keep having sleeps in between though. It could just be the heat but like I say its gone on for a couple of weeks with me saying oh its just the heat and it cany carry on much longer.
Anyway if you could keep your fingers crossed it is heat and old age rather than something nasty that would be great please
love

Shes still there!! They kept her in  :'( Turns out not eating was the least of the problems
The vet listened to her chest and said oh thats not good. She thinks Mogs has a chest infection but of course it could be worse. The worry is that when Mogs had her check up and vacs in April I mentioned she wheezed sometimes, her chest was clear and the vet said she was a noisy breather. It looks like its more than that now. Mogs is having blood tests and being put on a drip this afternoon. Depending on the results they want to sedate her and do a chest x-ray but we decided to do the tests first as sedating an old cat is risky anyway. Apart from that the vet said the kidneys were 'prominent' she said they werent enlarged just easy to feel but as Mogs has lost so much weight that could be it. She wasnt over worried about the food which surprised me but I guess it is the least of the problems. I feel bad now because the noise I thought was Mogs gulping or burping was actually her grunting when she tries to breathe
Im not sure she will come home from this but fingers crossed please
Im now waiting by the phone. The vet said she will call or I should phone around 4pm.

Sending positive vibes,  Don't feel bad, I was the same with Sam - he used to cough quite a lot, and I just put it down to furballs but it actually turned out to be a heart condition.

Well Ive got an update from the vets. Aparantly Mogs is quite happy curled up in the cage with her drip, watching the world go by and they are going  to give her some ad (?) cat food as it is 'rich and tastes nice' If Im honest the idea that Mogs is happy in a cage is worrying enough as she doesnt do confinsed spaces but its better than her getting stressed out.

The vet says that Mogs blood results are 'ok'. Her glucose is raised from 8 to 12 but they're not normally classed as diabetic until its in the 20's so the vet says its probably stress. Her kidney function is raised too. It should be under 11 but its 13, again the vet says its not bad enough for kidney problems and is in her opinion due to Mogs age. This means though that the vet doesnt really know whats going on. Mogs is on a drip and anti biotics and will stay in over night. Tomorrow the vet will listen to her chest again and see how it sounds before phoning me to discuss the options. Either send Mogs home with more anti biotics and hope its an infection even though the white blood count wasnt raised or keep her in sedate her and do a chest x-ray.

So tonight its just me and Amber which could be fun as Amber is already doing the cuddle me dont leave me alone routine  :evillaugh:
Then again it also probably means that when Mogs comes home (not if) Amber will go mad at the 'new' cat again

Well Mogs was allowed home last night with anti biotic tablets. Shes still not well, wheezing and sometimes grunting to breathe but not as bad as she was. I was worried that she hadnt had a drink that Ive seen but after phoning the vets who said that as she had a mouthfull of fish she might just not be thirsty. I cooked some coley with a lot of water so Ive been trying that and she had a little.
Hopefully she will continue to improve otherwise its back to the vets and sedation and chest xrays as the enxt thing

Shes about 18. I got her 12 yrs ago from a rescue who let me have her half price as they said she was old, ill and wouldnt live. The vet then said she was about 6 so Im guessing at 18 but I dont realy know.

Sorry I haven't posted on this before Tab. Fingers crossed the meds work. I know with some of mine, one of the kidney values has been slightly raised and my vet says it can be like that with an infection so hopefully that is all it is. How is Amber being with her?

Well Mogs seems quite bright. She jumped on the bed this morning to say hello which is good. Amber is being fine with her which is also good. The only problem is that Amber seems to have decided the tasty anti biotics are a treat and wants to eat them. Its not been easy trying to give Mogs her blood pressure tablet as well as these anti biotics because if I put one down Amber tries to eat it  :evillaugh:
Apart from that Mogs still isnt drinking and apart from eating some coley last night isnt eating either. Ive got extra water bowls around because of the heat and whilst sitting here Ive just watched Mogs get up and sit and stare into the water bowl then get up and walk away again. Im keeping an eye on her and keep pulling her skin to make sure shes not dehydrated. Im going to syring esome water into her in a while. Ive been putting it off hoping she'd drink but its too hot for no water now. Ive also got more coley for tea. I dont mind feeding Mogs coley at each meal but Amber has to have some too and then wont eat cat food after.
I did speak to the vet last night about the eating and drinking but she said that she didnt think it would be in Mogs best interest to go back in and on a drip again if its not the chest thats the problem. I know what she means in that Mogs has to eat and drink herself as a drip is a short term cure and unless she needs more medical attention its not fair to have her admitted again.
Thanks for the thought
