My friend and I trapped 5 ferals the other night, she took 3 and I took 2 in to be spayed/neutered. Just my luck that the one I had spayed had had 3 kittens about 4 weeks ago :oh noo: My friend took hers back this morning to be released and heard some kittens crying in the hedge obviously looking for mum :'( She had one male and 2 females but both females were only just pregnant so we knew they couldn't be any of theres. I phoned my vets up and it turns out the female I had was producing a little milk so it's likely she is the mum. I hate releasing them too early but in this case, I really had no choice. I bunged a load of food down for the babies and luckily they are eating and hopefully their cries will alert mum as to where they are. I will be going down later to check on them and hopefully she will be reunited with them, otherwise I'll have to leave it a couple of days and if need be, try and get hold of them :sigh:

at least you know they are there an can keep an eye out

I hate it when something like that happens.
Fortunately when it has we have been able to bring in the babes as well , tame them and then release mum once spayed a few weeks later.

The problem with these is no one knew the kittens were there. It was just sheer luck that my friend heard them this morning and then of course it was panic stations to get the mum released again. Hopefully they will be ok but in future when they go to the vets, I will have to add it to the check list for them to tell me if they are producing because there's just no way of knowing. Luckily we have found a lady who is feeding the cats so I'll pop round later and show her where to put the food for the babies. There's a few people in the area that hate cats apparently so we have to keep it a bit hush hush as well, hopefully we can get them as soon as they are big enough and before they are seen. It's quite dense where they are hidden, lots of weeds and bushes so they are at the moment well hidden from view.

Amzing they survived for so long. I guess they just ate cat food as they were so hungry?
Hope it works out OK Dawn

What a shame the kittens couldnt have been brought in.

not an ideal situation Dawn but I know you'll do your best to get babies and mums sorted best you can
sometimes these things just don't quite go to plan.

If they are ferals and no one knew they were there, then I find myself wondering where 4 week old kittens got the cat food from or am I missing something, had a feeder been feeding he/she would have heard cries.

Reading back Dawns Post Teresa she says that she put the food down for the babies once she knew where they were. Correct me if I'm wrong here Dawn I just couldn't find any mention of you saying locals were feeding the babies.??????
From what you've said Dawn someone is already feeding the adults yes? which is really good of them... and mum has had her babies hidden away from the feeding spot, which of course is typical of feral locals.

That just backs up the point I was making, they have starved until Dawn put the food down, poor babies so lucky to have survived.

Locals do put food down for the cats, there are 2 places where food is left out constantly so they would have had access to food. The usual feeding spot is one garden down from where these kittens were hidden. They are too small to catch in the trap and we weren't able to reach them and I think if anything, they have a better chance with mum than they have at being brought in. When they are bigger, they will be caught, tamed down and rehomed. I'm not into splitting mum and babies up if there really is no need and in this case, there isn't. I went back last night and it looks as if mum have moved the babies, we have a lady watching out for them so if there's any problems we can step in.

Kittens look to be about 4 weeks old Mark so they'll be ready for eating solids now.
