I decided we were going to bite the bullet and catproof the garden. It was a huge job because all the fences needed replacing and we had to get rid of some of the trees. Secur-a-cat came this week and installed the catproofing. My husband and I are building a 'kitty-lock' to blcok the drive, which is almost finished on the garden side so we were able to let the kittens out for the first time.
