Title: covcats - have i room in my house - oh no!!!!!
Post by: Angiew on March 16, 2008, 00:42:29 AM
Been working in London today, got back at 5pm and caught up wih my phone calls. At 7 pm get a phone call to inform me that a couple have just taken a heavily pregnant cat in to their flat. She has been hanging around the flats for 3 weeks and no one seems to own her.

I , now having space and hoping to pick up the stray tortie tomorrow, take her home and god! does she make all sorts of noises in the car.

I took her up to the foster room , open the top of the pen and she has just given birth to a kitten and is starting to remove the sack.  followed by the slice of liver called the afterbirth

Have my now cold tea (yep the Macaroni chees and kitten poo conversation) go back upstairs and theres another one wriggling around. 1 hour later a third pops out and at the moment that is the total. Mum cat has eaten and been dozing and is quite friendly and chilled about the whole thing - which is more than me - never been present at a birth before and if I thought the after birth was   I reckon the chewing on the placenta thing is

wonder if that its now - will see in the morning!
Mummy is grey and white, first baby black and white, second grey tabby and thirs white with a few little black patches.

So once again my thanks to Jasmine, Chris and Purrs 'cos if the three cats had come here I would have really struggled to help this one out!!
All these little lives helped by the co-operation of the local rescues.

I might even get to bed soon (after my cigar  ;D).

OH was there when I brought her in , I think he came to tell me that supper was burning but was quite mesmerised by watching the first kitten being seen to. :Luv2:

Wow!

What an amazing experience - despite the !

I don't know what I would have done in the same situation - I think that I would have been a bit worried that I wasn't doing the *right* thing and would have been torn between staying there 'just in case' and wanting to be googling for the answers!

But I guess that Mother Nature, in her infinite wisdom, has proved that once again the animal world copes quite capably. . . . .

Congratulations!   :Luv:

Are you choosing names?! We look forward to photos!

How are Mum and babies today? and how are you? did you get any sleep?

Can't wait to see the pics ...... although I shouldn't be looking as I love the thought of B&W kittens  :evillaugh:

Thought I'd just do an update on this thread.
Still only 3 kittens this morning.
Mum and kittens are all doing well. Mum is eating and enjoying being fussed and has gone for a wee though nothing else yet.
She's still quite large in her ribcage area but as she's in no stress at the moment I'll leave things until tomorrow and see what our normal vet says.

I have read that they can have two batches a few days apart due to different matings.

There does not seem to be any wriggling going on so it may just be the insides need to shrink again - or of course it may be a host of other non-kitten related things going on!

:1st place: Mum cat on your beautiful (haven't seen them but I'm sure they are!) babies  ;D  It's great news that you had space to take her in Angie, I'm always amazed at how many times networking from Purrs can help cats that otherwise would have had a very bleak outlook  :( Looking forwrad to pics of the babies when they're a bit bigger Angie  :poke:

And as you all know how rubbish I am at naming cats , you can all decide.

Aww, bless her. She might not have any more kittens, it might just be cos her uterus is big from carrying, it isn't that common to have them apart. Aww, they are gorgeous- I also had my first experience of labour and newborns this year, I couldnt believe the mess!!

Sorry Guys.

Went in this morning and the kitten fairy had been in the night and left a black kitten :naughty:

So... crispie , snack , crackle and pop may need new names - unless you can think of one to add to the list?
Mum and 4  kittens doing well - just scived off work to see if anything else happens. phoned up vets who say don't panic as long as mum and kits seem ok - so won't - or not too much

Mum cat ate like crazy all day yesterday, then stopped eating in the evening followed by a poo. Followed by another poo for England (good I thought, Thats the fatness explained and indeed she did go to almost normal size).

Oh well, I supppose each litter needs a black one :Luv2:

:evillaugh: bless the arrival of little 'Cheerio'?!

 don't know CP , it could have a more sinister tone.

Unless any one wants to differ I've come up with some jiggling and have a new name for an old baby so now its -

Crispie - mum
Snap - black and white first born
Crackle - tabby 2nd born
Frosty - white and black third born

and Pop the lazy black git who really couldn't be bothered

I'll think of some more just in case  :naughty:

I don't get how Cheerio can be bad, so I am even worse than you Amy  :evillaugh:

Being the pessimist the first thing that came to mind was as in 'goodbye'  :-[

Anyway names are evolving, we just had more visitors and our chairwoman thinks mum cat should be called Crystal (I thought Crispy was 'orrible).
Am going to put them on the web as Crystal and family. Pop will probably be called pip (pipsqueak) as we have our own cat pepsi who is called pops so that might get confusing.

Oh well a rose by another other name and all that.........

Oh of course... duh  :tired:

Awww Crystal is nice - perhaps all the kittens could be other precious materials? (Hope that makes sense!) ;D
Title: Re: covcats - have i room in my house - oh no!!!!!
Post by: blackcat on March 17, 2008, 12:57:14 PM
rose, smoke, lead, all types of crystal. I am sure there are others on here who are more in touch with the various sorts of crystal you can get. Zircon, amethyst, ruby, citrine ....

Precious and semi precious stone names-

Amber, Citrine, Peridot, Pearl, Topaz, Emerald, Ruby, Quartz, Moonstone, Amethyst, Iolite, Obsidian,Tourmaline, Opal, Garnet, Turquoise, Sapphire, Tanzanite, Violet,Aqua,Jet, Aurora?

(Sorry I used to be a silversmith!  :scared:) Personally I think Aurora, Sapphire, Opal and Amber are lovely names  :Luv2:

:welcome: little black kitty (I think you are blessed Angie!)

Crystal is nice, but what about Tulia for Mum:
The girl's name Tulia \t(u)-lia\ is of Spanish and Latin origin. From an ancient Roman family name, Tullius. Of uncertain meaning, though it may be related to the Etruscan word "tul", which refers to a heavy rain or downpour. Also possibly means "bound for glory".

Seems appropriate for her... just a thought anyhow, isn't naming fun!  ;D

As for names  :um: Crystal suits Mum  :Luv2: I guess we have to wait till we know the sex of the gorgeous wee bundles of fluff before naming them  :evillaugh:

Bless mum. I agree with Ellie about sexes before names. I wouldnt have thought anythign sinister about Cheerio due to the thinking behind the name.

You have a 'kitten fairy."????

I WANT A KITTEN FAIRY !!!!

(I liked the first set of names better. But I didn't get the 'Cheerio' reference until it was pointed out . . . . :-[. Not a huge fan of the name Crystal - it sounds too delicate and breakable (and too glitzy girly) for a brave little cat that waits a couple of days before birthing another kit! She needs a name that is go-getting, strong, etc. Crystal doesn't do that for me, personally . . . .  .. :tired:)

But hey.

I would also wait to see the gender of the kits before naming - alot of the crystally names are rather feminine . .  . . although I can't see why the little black one can't be called Jet  . . . . .it's a stone, isn't it??!

That's impressive. We dont allow people to reserve kittens that young though, as we feel it jinx's things. I think 6 weeks is the minimum we allow them to look, although we did it at that age last year and then lost the one that was reserved, so think we will increase it this year.

We may well indeed!  :)

We have now changed our reservation to the Tabby and the White one! They are all so gorgeous its hard to pick but si my husband fell in love with the tabby...

The mother had a lovely temperament and never stopped purring, with her and Angie i think they are in excellent hands  :)

I try not to believe in Jinxs! (touch wood!)

We don't have any hard and fast rules about at what ages kittens should be viewed, but personally I think that if someone is prepared to wait 8 weeks for kittens then it is only fair that they should have the opportunity of seeing them grow up. I did explain the risks that these are still so young they may not make it. As long as we are careful about hygiene I think the kittens will not be subject to any more risk and it will be nice for them to have some contact with their new parents before they go.

I'd bbe interested in what others do - Will raise a new topic in R+R.

Lol!

Well i'm not sure we have room for all of them plus mom - if they stay that small then yes but we all know that won't happen!

It would be quite a big leap to go from no cats to 1 cat plus 4 kittens!

Haven't sexed them yet but think tabby is a boy.

Coming up to 4 weeks old they are now becoming individuals in their own right and I am now beginning to play a bit with them. Sent you a photo of the two which I hope you enjoy.

They don't look so cute now. Just on the second day of wormer - I know left it late!
poor things hate the stuff and I feel rotten forcing the stuff in - not quite sure how much of it is going in as i seem to end up with most of it on me.

Still, I reckon the vet was very accurate with weighing them so can afford to lose a few point of a ml. :scared:

I think it must be the Panacur granules that you mix in with their food over five days, Gill. That's what our vets prescribe for little ones this small.

They're adorable!  :wow: :naughty:

Poor little Link the tabby kitten is constipated - I actually pulled a little bit of poo from him today as he had been crying and scratching in the tray. Too many kitten biscuits and mummy milk but will he listen to me?

He's had some oily pilchards this evening as I don't hav any katalax in.

He also found a spare toilet roll on top of the pen and I sawing him trashing half of it! Oh well, whats another bad habit - nothing to do with me honestly!
Perhaps he was just trying to tell me something?

I'm sorry that Roxy's eye's a bit poorly but keep me updated on that.

mum cat has just gone to her new home this afternoon complete with new buster collar as she has decided to start chewing on her stitches today after being spayed 5 days ago.

They are gorgeous, hope you have lots of fun with them.
Angie, if the mum cat was spayed 5 days ago, it will have congealed enough that if she does pull out her stitches, it wont do any harm.

Roxy is the white one and Link is the Tabby  :Luv2:

We should find out this week about roxy's eye so she can start treatment  :)

They have been eyeing up the birds today from the kitchen patio doors - i opened it to see what they would do and they ventured about 2 feet out the door and heard the slightest noise and bolted back into the house! they are so adorable to watch... i'm glad they still have a few months till they can go outside properly tho!

OMG how did I miss this thread and the gorgeous pics of Roxy and Link?  :Luv2: :Luv2:

I love the toilet roll pics    there must be something in the air at the moment ... I came home from work on Friday to find my toilet toll at the bottom of the stairs and full of little tiny nail marks  :innocent:  I know it was Rossi that did it but as this is the first time I'll forgive her! (Rossi is 2 years old).

Fingers crossed for her eye. I wouldnt open doors for them, they might get a taste of the fresh air and then it would be cruel to take it away from them till they have been neutered.

Don't worry - they won't be going wondering outside till they have been neutered... i don't think that letting them onto the patio for a few mins is going to do them much harm though... the way they play and run around inside they have plenty of fun, i think its good for them to have a look outside, to know what their garden looks like and they get used to noises outside as well - as long as they are with each other they could be on the moon and they would still have fun! they aren't missing out on anything at the moment, and they are constantly purring whenever we're near them  :)
