Cat Toy Safety
Did you know there are no Animal toy safety laws! Any person can make an Animal toy and sell it without thinking of the safety aspect of the toy for your loved pet.
As huge animal lovers ourselves, we test all the toys we sell on Purrs with various cats of all ages and esp on our own much adored furkids. We only sell the toys we feel are safe and loved by our own and the tester cats. However, there are many different cat personalities out there and a toy that one cat may not chew, another cat might. If you have a newly adopted cat or young kitten who's personality you are not sure of yet, please supervised play. Every cat owner should make sure any toys given to their cats are totally safe for their individual personalities. Our firm advice is to always supervise play with any and all toys and put away in a place that cannot be reached afterwards.
Whether a toy is unsafe depends to some extent on the individual cat. Obviously there are certain things that are definitely off-limits (eg. playing with rubber bands). Cat toys may be safe or unsafe depending on habits of your particular feline. For example, fluttering pieces of ribbon/ string may be fine for a cat which will only bat it with their paws but would be dangerous for a cat that loves to put everything in their mouth ,chew and swallow them, as they can cause a serious gastrointestinal blockage. So if your cat is prone to eating toys, you should never leave your cat alone while playing, only under constant supervision (it can only take a very short time for your cat to swallow part of the toy). Put away safely out of reach every time you walk away and after the play session.
Commercial cat toys come in a variety of shapes and sizes and using them to play with your cat can provide valuable bonding time for you and your feline friend. In general, most of these toys are fine for your cat to play with under supervision. Read labels on toys and use your own judgment to suit each of your cats personalities.
The very best toys for your cat are the Interactive and teaser cat toys where you take part in play. Interactive play helps strengthen the bond between you and your cat by letting you share fun and positive experiences.
Cat Interactive & Teaser Toys satisfy your cat's natural hunt & chase instinct. They are NOT CHEW toys. They are designed for human interaction only with your cat(s) to encourage cats to play and exercise. You can put life into the toy, so that the target (prey) at the end of the string can wiggle, creep, fly or dart around the room, or garden. All the interactive toys should be put away when the play sessions are over. They should never be left with your cat to chew or destroy (as s/he would actual live prey) or left in a place where your cat can reach them without your participation. This is to protect your cat from injury and to make sure that the toys keep their strong appeal.
Whichever toy you choose for your loved furkids, play safe :)
