I think they know their names but only answer to it if they feel the urge. (Much like people if we're honest. ;))

Glad Babe is settling in well.  :)

Do cats respond to their actual names or is it your tone of voice when you call them?

To respond to this, possibly rhetorical question ... I think it is a bit of both, and their motivations. If I stand at the back door and call Esther and Smidgen, I used exactly the same intonation for both names, but the one I am calling is usually the one who responds. If I am indoors and say the name of one of them in conversation, Smidgen will respond, but Esther won't. If I yell the name because smidgen is doing something dreadful or lifethreatening (Esther never does this), then the two cats and the dog all stop what they are doing and look guilty. So it is hard to tell, really.

Glad Babe has found a home where she can be loved and dieted and exercised, lol

I thought you all might like an update on how Babe (as she is now called) is settling in. I wasn't sure about changing her name but as she didn't respond to either Mystery or Fattipuss, I decided to go for one I felt comfortable with. Do cats respond to their actual names or is it your tone of voice when you call them? I've found the best way of attracting attention is to spread my newspaper on the floor and begin to read. Cue for furry bottom to be planted right on the bit I'm reading. Failing that, open the fridge! Although, funnily enough, for a big cat, she's not very interested in food apart from her own rations. It's the first time I've ever been able to cook without having a cat throwing itself under my feet, giving an Oscar winning performance of pitiful starvation. I was most concerned about keeping her indoors but her previous owner assured me that Babe wasn't bothered about going out and so it has proved. I suspect that going out might involve making an effort, not her strong point. She is the world's most laid back, lazy cat. She's very friendly and affectionate, and greets visitors by giving them a good licking. It's a novelty to have a cat that actually likes visitors. All my previous mogs were full or cross Siamese, who reacted to the doorbell like a bankrupt when the bailiff arrives: hide under the bed until they've gone.

She's had her breakfast and her 'mad' half hour, when she races about the flat like a Tom and Jerry cartoon, and is settling down for a hard day's snoozing. She is the most delightful creature and I'm so glad that I found this lovely forum which led me to her. Thank you very much.

(Sorry, still no piccies!)

Yeay! Mystery is quite a pretty name actually. Much more apt than Fatipuss which is terribly unflattering for such a lovely looking girl.

Well, Fatipuss aka Mystery (although I might change it to something I think suits her more) has arrived and is settling in. Ish. Everywhere has been inspected and sniffed, several times over. She disappeared at one stage and I panicked, although I hadn't left any windows or doors open. I eventually found her dozing off in a dark little comfort zone she'd found between a big armchair and the wall. I'm leaving her to her own devices and I'm sure she'll soon get used to her new home. She is, by the way, adorable.   :Luv2:

I'm sure she will lose her "puppy fat" if she is on a mix of wet and good quality dry food.  :Luv2:

;D ;D  Really exciting news! Fatipuss, who's proper name is Mystery, should be in her new home with me by lunchtime. I've just phoned her owner, who is going to drive her over. She thinks that the cat shouldn't have any problems adapting to the indoor life. Will keep you all posted.   ;D ;D

I only joined Purrs today, hoping to find a furry chum,  and I think I'm already in love!   :Luv2:  Two possible problems: I'm looking for an indoor cat - would she adapt? I live in west London and don't have transport.  Oh dear, shall I get me coat?   :-[

I live in Fulham and I can definately help you with transport if you decide to adopt Fattipuss as I have family over that way.
